These and the 071, desperately need a compound heli, something like the SB-1.

That is an interesting technology but it isn't quite viable yet.
People have been working on compound helis for decades and yet you see none in service.

I have to agree that China needs a better aviation component for their flattops.

It's too obsolete and can't be based out of an LHD.

There's the planned heavy helicopter being worked on with Russia. But it was supposed to use a Russian helicopter engine which isn't available yet. PD-8V. Work on this engine was originally being done at Klimov but was moved to Kuznetsov design bureau because of excess workload at Klimov.

I suppose another possibility would be to use an engine derived from the Chinese AEP500 turboprop.

How about Mil Mi-26? China afaik have some. I also remember there was a cooperation between China and Russia to design and manufacture the more modern Mi-26 heavy helo
