Re: PLAN Carrier Construction

Somebody needs to built a 100K ton LHD. The technology and know how is obviously there only the will and $$ to do it I guess. I think that is a very viable and useful ship to have. A ship that can carry 6-8 LCACs or 24-30 LCMs, 2 full Marine MEUs (expeditionary unit), a couple dozen Ospreys, half a dozen SeaHwaks, a dozen navalized Apaches and couple dozen F-35Bs and couple Chinooks and other speciliazed birds. Mix and match depending on mission profiles.

for humanitarian missions replace the fighters and attack choppers with more Chinooks, Sea Stallions etc and outfit the deck with self contain modular medical and or procedure rooms that can be easily remove. For Sea Control replace Ospreys with more F-35Bs and ASW assets.

Those medical modules could be placed on the hangar deck. Perhaps as much as 30% of a hanga could be used for humanitarian needs if need be.

On board Hancock in 1975 medical and humanitarian supplies were placed in Hangar bay 3 during Operation Frequent Wind.

Official picture from CSOC because it was shown on their booth with their logo on it

At AAD 2014 CSOC showcased OPV, LPD and Aircraft Carrier designs from China

At AAD 2014 (Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition which took place from the 17 to 21 September in South Africa) the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company (CSOC) showcased its P-18N Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) and its LPD/LHD design. The booth also featured a scale model of China's aircraft carrier Liaoning. CSOC is part of the part of the State Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC).

Of course, CSOC people said it is only for export (they usually become nervous and stop answering my questions whenever I start asking questions regarding PLAN ships...)

Hmmm....

I don't like sacrificing carrier deck space for CIWS systems, why not just put them on sponsons like on the Liaoning?

Notching out the flight deck doesn't seem any easier or more efficient - and its just plain ugly.

And once again, like in the Liaoning, the island is too big... are helicopter operations more complicated than fixed-wing?

Does it really have to be that big?

Why don't they include an angled flight deck and provisions for a ski ramp? Ya know, just in case you want to do some fixed wing stuff.

And popeye, did the food from the galley have anything to do with the name of the operation? (Frequent Wind).

Bet you guys had a field day with that one.

Are you sure this is from China? The scenary doesn't look particularly Chinese, and the tugboat has a German flag.

It's the stern part of one of the Russian Mistrals being towed from SPB to France via Nord-Ostsee-Kanal.
