That is a interesting picture and it looks like the right size

It doesn't help that there is a HSH watermark right at the most interesting section, see that to me looks like a compartment section not of the aft but the bow part, clearly it's not the well deck but looks to be the size of one of the frontal compartments either the top or bottom one the ones we have seen showing the parked IFV deep inside the Type 071 LPD

My feeling is that opening is pretty characteristic of a internal compartment now unless a civilian cargo vessel is being built with one this could be a LPD module

One side shot would confirm it

No question about it a LPD is a very valuable tool in the navy and a gives plenty of flexibility for on sea operations

For a marine expeditionary unit you need the following

Aviation element
Ground element
And a logistics element

All these lead by a large command element a large LHA class ships

If China builds such a unit they will need a LHA along with 2-3 LPD and a large LST ships (20,000+tons) those smaller Type 072III won't do

You give each fleet 1 x LHA and 3 x LPD and 1-2 x LST

So that means China need to build 3 x LHA, up to 9 x LPD and 3-6 large LST

They have built 3 x Type 071 LPD they are good and spacious ships they need to keep building those and start to add in larger flat tops

Only issue with a PLAN ARG is that unless they don't have a VTOL aircraft they won't be able to provide fixed wing fighter support and will have to rely on a aircraft carrier not always possible

Whereas future ARG of USN will be able go it alone with air centric America Class with F35B

Long ago, to many of us, US planned for two large wars and a small one being fought at the same time. That has been reduced to one or one and a half war at one time. China is surely planning for one war at a time, and not too far away, and won't need VTOL aircraft similar to Harrier or F-35B.

This is true but these days Australia, Japan and many other country's who are in the middle of establishing ARG are going to have the capability to deploy fixed wing fighter support from flat tops without the need for a full aircraft carrier so it's certainly a question that should be asked with regards to PLAN

And a aircraft carrier doesn't come alone it comes with it's full standard of escort ships which pretty much calls for a carrier strike group which means $$$

Countries like Austalia and Japan will not engage in amphibious warfare, or even any warfare, except in support of a US operation. The strategic situation of China is very different.
