Re: Type 071 LPD

I have no clue on shipbuilding what so ever but, would it be possible to devellop the basic LPD as a low cost/low risc heliccopter carrier? Plenty of space, commonallity of basic items, ...
This should give the pla navy the possibility to exercise and train officers on integreated air, sea and landing maneuvres to prepare for the possible arrival of a carrie

Not in my opinion. The flight deck is to small. You can only operate 2 helos at a timesafely on a deck that size. No, in order for the PLAN to learn how to operate a helo carrier(LPH) they actually need one. But an LPD is a good starting place.

I guess pendragon meant to say can the hull of 071 be modified to an LHD, or an LHD designed based on the hull of 071. I think this is hard and not necessary. Amphbious ships are generally cheap, at least outside US. An LHD costs only 1/2-2/3 of a modern destroyer, except in US. The hard part is the ability to operate helicopters in all weather at sea. PLAN just achieved night landing ability of ship bone helicopter in 2005. Now here comes her first LPD. I think we need to wait for at least a few years for her first LHD, and that should be an independent design. Currently there is a training ship that can handdle 2 large helicopters simultaniously.

I hope they'd install the same VLS SAM system from 054A on this ship and not the HQ-7.

I seriously doupt that. HHQ-16 which is onboard the 054A needs the Fregat/Sea Eagle type radar added with the Orekh look-a-like fire control radars not to mentioning alot of below the deck space which is not somehting you have much to spend in amphibious ships.

It seems that the type 071 will not have any SAM being fitted. This isen't huge setback if you look similar type of vessels serving in other navies. Of all the worlds LSDs, only Ivan Rogov and the Singaborean Endurance class have other than man-portable SAMs fitted.

I think this LPD needs only short range AA-selfdefence; something like a couple of kashtan gun&missile mount. More and heavier equipment would hinder it's main mission. Leave the fighting to the fighting ships in the flottila.

I agree, VLS would take too much space.

But for the LC, I think the new catamaran landing craft is the one going to be used? It's the only one we've heard about in progress and useful.

What catamaran landing craft are you talking about? The only catamaran craft in use by the PLAN is the FAC. It's be pointless to put that thing int he 071.

I guess he means this thing:

It may be modified to fit in 071. But I do think LCAC is the best solution.

:coffee: Some kind of air cushion landing craft will problaby be used. Dont know what type though. Type 724 looks to small and the Zubr looks to big.
