re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

Is it just me or isn't it a little unusual to hold maneuvers with the 071 in the lead?

You would think that she would be led by one of the escort frigates followed by the destroyer with the UNREP vessel tucked in behind and another pair of escorts bringing up the rear.

It just doesn't seem to be realistic from an operations point of view.

From the point of PR stunt. It looks sensible. ;)

In a combat situation the task force will likely have a DDG leading the early warning escort, on the look out for fighters and take down any anti ship missiles that might be fired at the task force

The assault force will be far behind this, these are Line ups for the cameras and this is just a excercise

Thanks for the pictures escobar! Photos of China's outposts in the South China Sea are rare. Can anyone identify the islands in the photos? The one with the fort built on a reef with the rusted shelters is Johnson South Reef. The one with the blue camouflage gun turret might be Fiery Cross Reef. The ones that show actual land must be in the Paracel Islands because China does not control any real islands in the Spratly group, only atolls.

Appears to be Triton Island, Zhongjian Dao (中建岛).

Actually the original spelling was read upside down and backwards. So 666 should actually be 999, as in 1999, the year of his return.

Well, it has been 14 years since 1999 has passed and I don't see any devil or demons anywhere, except in sports teams nick names of course.:p

Hmmm...666...the devils flagship?:p
Come on equation...I know its meant as a joke, but, sadly, on the internet, there always some folks will not take it that way.

I mean the landing spot looks like a "Peace" sign too, which is a symbol of the broken cross.

But actually, all kidding aside, the number is meant to be read from an aircraft approaching the stern of the ship, not from the ship itself. So it is 999 as you fly towards it and are never uncertain about where you are landing.
