071 LPD thread

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

I think the choice of AK630 might have something to do with the design of the 071. If you consider where the AKs are placed, its hard to think how you could replace them with a pair of 730/1030 without leaving obvious blind spots and loosing the benefits if doubling up on targets through a wide range of angles. Yet replacing the AK630s one-for-one with Type 730s would simply be excessive.

The problem is the side funnel designs, which blocks LOS, and the only way around that is to put CIWS on both sides of the funnel, which is precisely what they have done with the AKs. With the current layout, a missile approaching from most directions could be engaged by a pair of AKs. Individually, the Type 730 might outperform AK630s, but its hard to argue that a single Type 730 would beat a pair of AK630s.

I think in term of gun based CIWS, the 071s feels like it could have done with the AK630s spread out a bit more, so the front pair could engage targets coming at the front of the ship more directly. They could also do with is an additional FN3000 launcher or two. Other improvements could be a bigger main gun, or even ditching the gun altogether and putting in as many of the new CCL VLS cells as they can fit. Even if they keep the gun, it feels like they could move it forwards some and given themselves enough space behind it for a few quad cells of the new VLS.

What would be a good successor to the AK-630's? AK-630M-2 Duet? Same mounting bracket from what I understand. Actually, that would increase the firepower and flexibility on the 071 but would be an even bigger impact for something like the 022 since it employs the 630 as its "main" gun. :)

good point, I think an additional 24 cell HQ-10 launcher with no reloading with its FCR located in the right place would make a lot of sense.

The Type 071 LPDs are high value vessels/assets.

As such, I can see no reason why putting four Type 730 to replace the four AK-630s would be any kind of overkill. In fact, it would be very worthwhile.

I would keep the two on port and starboard, aft on the main deck house above the hanger just as they are. I would move the other two from their positions just forward of the stacks, to port and starboard on the forward portion of the deck house near the bridge which would give them much better LOS to the front of the vessel without sacrificing anything along the sides.

Then, right in the middle of that main deck house, on port and starboard, either at the very edge or on a small portruding ledge on either side, I would place a 15 round HQ-10 launcher on both sides. That would provide 30 rounds and good LOS and coverage on both sides.

Such an overall defense would be very effective and very worthwhile given the number of troops, vehicles, and helos the vessels can carry. For me, for large high value assets, you can never have enough of its own CIWS and defense for cleaning up any stray or leakers that get past your escorts. The cost benefit analysis is simply too compelling.

I'd keep the gun, and make it as big as possible for providing shore support within a few miles of the beach for any troops assaulting those beaches, either amphibiously or by air back behind the beaches.

Anyhow, just my thoughts.
