I thought it's been established that there is only black numbering in the PLAN/China Navy. The US style white numbering was a PS.

They're testing it, and CV-16 Liaoning already using it.

Once they decide to adopt that fleet-wide, it should be quick because that's just simple paint job.

Oops, my bad! The white numbering looks good on the Liaoning. Does it have anything to do with it being a 'training' ship though?

Does the PLAN has a standard for hull numbering or do the local shipyards choose black vs white blocks? This back and forth suggest the lack of universal standard.

There is a speculation over the internet that says the white numbers are for the rumored fourth independent carrier fleet only.

The all black is the old standard...and is still in use in most acses.

The White, shadowed numerals (like the US system) is new and has been seen so far on only two vessels that I am aware of, the Liaoning and one of the Type 054s.

Some think this will be the pennant scheme for the Carrier Battle Group alone, but I have seen no substntiation of this.

They are clearly using it though and it is to some purpose.

The new system was first implemented on ships in East Sea Fleet. It will be implemented in other fleets in the future.

Using my novice sleuth skills, I'm guessing this ship is in the HD shipyard since there is an unnumbered 052C in the background. ;)

Seems all random at the moment to me since the Liaoning belongs to the NSF and she got a white numbering. I believe the 056 from Wuhan got the black numbering so it's not safe to say all new ships being commissioned get the white numbering either. The only speculation that may seem to have some weight would be ships destined to be part of the CVBG are getting the white numbering system, but I think that's a big mistake to so openly identify what ships belong to a CVBG or not.
