Is this photographed at Dalian or Shanghai? The water looks too blue to be at the mouth of Yangtze.

and yea, its definitely Dalian, too hilly for Shanghai and buildings are very different.

No wonder something feels odd (namely, why would the 055's first sea trial be that far up north of Shanghai, and how is it possible for a helicopter to operate from the 055 during her first sea trial)...

Yes it got me too, I wasnt thinking. I mean I assumed it would be the 055 recently launched at Dalian but then that would be crazy given the state of (un)readiness of that hull when it got moved across the bay.

Lesson of the day, if a photo looks remarkable, it probably is. For the wrong reasons.

Drones are not the game changers, Missiles are the true game changers. Guess who carries missiles? Destroyers. So, actually Destroyers and even bigger destroyers like Cruisers are making a comeback. Cause they have the radar, air/missile defense and anti-ship missile capability. Carriers are actually getting obsolete cause they are too big, too expensive and easy target for anti-ship missiles.

Moreover, thanks to drones, you don't need manned planes to do certain tasks that only a plane from a carrier can do. Like over-the-horizon radar and ISR. So, in the future drone will takeover these tasks and you may have only a smaller drone carrier. Guess who is ahead in terms of drone carriers? China.

I actually expect China to make even bigger ship than the 055 in the next generation. A battlecruiser so to speak. It will have even more powerful radar, bigger and more numerous missiles. Drones will provide the targeting while this new ship can be the missile launcher.

They need a bigger type 076 with 2 catapults, that can carry even more drones.

面多了加水，水多了加面。Sooner or later, the scope creep means that you would end up with a Fujian-sized, super-duper LHD that would be too difficult to build, too complex to operate and maintain, and too expensive to procure in required numbers instead.

It'd be better for us to stick to the ground - The 076 is still very much an LHD. It's main role is still to launch and support amphibious assault operations, not to fight enemy aerial forces in the warzone.

Not that I'm opposed to the PLAN having flat-decks with two full-sized EMCATs each - But that design would be better off serve as a proper medium CV without well decks and other facilities that go towards supporting amphibious assault and support operations.

I don't think we are ever going into the Kirov battlecruiser territory, simply due to how massive the ship will be (and thus, how expensive and difficult it is to procure, operate and maintain such a beast, especially if they are to be inducted in significant numbers).

Instead of being Kirov-equivalents - I do envision that the follow-up/successor classes to the 055 DDGs should be in the JMSDF ASEV's category of ~15000-16000 tons of full displacement. Anymore significantly bigger and the PLAN risks stepping into the footsteps of the Soviet Navy.

Come on guys, why always this obsession on „needs to be bigger“! Are we really down to that level, where only a bigger 076, a bigger 055 or bigger 00X aircraft carrier is better?

As if the PLAN has not already enough experience to design and build the ships it needs.
