Has there been any official source on the total number of ships that will be built and the timeline? Or is 16 just a rumour?

Even 16 feels quite insufficient today considering the military buildup of Korea and Japan with their sejong and maya destroyers and F35s and the increasing number of capital assets like 075s

16 was never associated with the total production run of all of the 055s and its expected successor variants.

16 was associated with the initial batches for vanilla/baseline 055s.

We do not know what the totality of future 055 variants will be or what they may look like (see evolution of 052 to 052B to 052C to 052D), nor how many will be ultimately built, nor in what timeline.

Look at how destroyer production is firmed up for the next 5-10 years in the US, but the long-term plan for the US naval force structure (with respect to destroyers) changes every 4-5 years.

So I would expect the Chinese force structure plans for the Type-055 (and other ships) to be revised every 5 years as standard.

But given the amount of economic growth we see every 5 years, production rates and force structure goals can be expanded dramatically to reflect the additional funding available, even if China continues spending at a demilitarised rate of 1.7% of GDP on the military.

If I had to guess, I expect somewhere between 24-40 will be produced in total.

I don't understand why anyone cares about the quantity of 055, the quantity of 055 will never be a problem, because there are too many shipyards in China. We should care about the progress of 055's successor, such as 055B destroyer

This is the second unsubstantiated post I've seen you make today that is highly questionable without sources. The first I just saw and responded to minutes ago:

Can you please provide proof when making such statements from now on?

The “all 055 production move to JiangNan”part is likely true, not only because there’s a couple of fairly reliable sources had said so, but also ,we have images of 052Ds being in construction in DaLian yard

People can be making speculative educated guesses based on what they are saying and somehow these posts becomes "rumors".

I am not even sure if those modules in Dalian are 052D or 055. At this stage and without sharp pictures, its hard to identify. zh.wiki entry on the 052D now lists four new entries of ships being made in Dalian.

Its possible that the 4 ship batch supposed to be made by Dalian may have been postponed or deterred, as all 052D production are shifted to Dalian. Production of 052D at Jiangnan may have been cancelled for the lack of slots, shifting all production to Dalian. Jiangnan is currently chock full of commercial ship contracts, but its also possible Jiangnan might be allocating resources to build ships like 004 in the future.

If Jiangnan builds 4 Type 055, I do not think it will end there. Remember this is just a batch. It will be followed by another, then another. By putting production into smaller batches, they can make refinements in the next batch. Its possible to cancel a longer term plan on the 055 to make way for an improved 055A.
