multiple sources are saying the 5th will launch soon in JNCX, as discussed here:

. This will be the 6th Aegis type surface combatant launched this year. If one more is launched this year after the 5th 055, it will be a new record of Aegis type vessels launched per year. The previous record was held by US in 1992 with 3 Tico and 3 Burkes launched in the same year.

A type 052d is expected from jiangnan later this year. It'll be sixth of the class launched this year.
That'll certainly break the record.

The faster they can roll out a full escort group’s worth of these ships, the better. PLAN needs a large amount of fleet destroyers. Even if China can’t match US’ 300 ship navy plan in numbers, introducing larger hulls with more sophisticated sensors could even the edge, especially if later 055s can fit railguns once they finish testing.

The PLAN needs heavy escorts

Type 055 is the one

I am not surprised how fast they are going

But this is a very high tonnage warship a lot of work is needed

That was exactly the reason the Yamato was built :D

can you explain why they need a heavy escort?

I would think just more vessels could also do the job. can power projection not be done with smaller vessels?

I think a need for heavier escorts is based on the tactical consideration:
  • "they" generally don't want to have a large number of vessels in a CSG, while
  • a larger warship mounts a higher number of missiles than a smaller warship, directly proportionally to displacement: Aug 14, 2019
(for instance two of Type 055 would mean 224 VLS cells which is an equivalent of three and a half of Type 052D)

ok maybe I was thinking literally by tonnage.

A thought came to mind that when two ships collide, like many of the videos of chinese coast guard encounters in the south china sea, smaller vessels would not be able to move the weight of a larger vessel when there is contact.

So perhaps when the Type 055 is being used to define a physical border for a US vessel in the south china sea trying to establish or deny freedom of navigation, there would be a physical impedance there in the form of weight??????
