That Mr.Ma analyst is very famous in China though. I think he is quite credible

Do you have a link to the particular segment you are talking about?

And I'm still not sure what your position is.
Is it that 055 will have propulsion issues, is it that 055 isn't using QC-280, is it that QC-280 is having issues, or is it that 055 won't have IEPS ready and therefore it can be argued to have propulsion issues, etc?

That way we can dissect what you're actually trying to say and give a proper response.

What was said was China had to settle for the 052D because of engine issues for the 055. Totally sounds illogical. Was this before this 055 mock-up showed up. The appearance of mock-up contradicts that concern unless one believes Chinese are irrational and will build something even if they know it won't work or have the components. It's the same logic of those who think China is in a conflict with itself where it has an instinctive date sometime in the future to go to war with racing to build capability and won't make it in time. But that logic is really about convincing the Chinese not to build it at all. It's like trying to convince China not to build carriers because "it takes decades to master..." Does China have a war to get to and won't make it in time? It has to start somewhere. The message is really they don't want the 055 built. Or look at the Chinese space program. "It's already been done so don't bother."

Fame does not equate to credibility, especially in the Chinese media. Mr. Ma has never said anything that wasn't on a Chinese forum somewhere before. He's not an insider, and has demonstrated an inability to parse and revise his information.

Im having trouble finding an online video but it was the Phoenix TV military show for April 8. It also showed up on multiple Chinese military forums that China is currently experiencing some issues with propulsion for the Type 055. It didn't mention the QC-280. So is it that the QC-280 isn't powerful enough for a larger ship such as Type 055 because if it was wouldn't China have already built a larger successor to the 052C?

I think its that 055 is having propulsion issues. It kinda makes sense since we all know that China is relatively weak in terms of engine technology.

Details matter. China hasn't had the same problem with ship engines as they've had with jet engines, in part because they have more flexible options for ships (for example, linking engines in series), and in part because ship engines require less rigour and reliability than jet engines. The Type 055 hasn't even been built yet, and despite all the moaning and groaning about engines on the Chinese military forums we know they're making some very solid progress, not just with gas turbines generally, but with jet engines specifically.

Okay, so from what I see, you are continuing to make a vague statement based on an untrue premise.

Engine technology has traditionally been a weakness for many PLA projects among many domains. Note the word "traditionally"
But now we know they have mastered gas turbines with output which is suitable for 055, given by the serial production of QC-280 for 052C and 052D. Furthermore we know it is most likely that 055 will be powered by QC-280.

Therefore I hope you can see that you making a general statement, based on an untrue premise, from an unreliable source (Phoenix TV lol).

So no, it doesn't make sense at all because we all know china has mastered most naval engine types including the kind which would power 055.
The only caveat is regarding IEPS, which we know they are on the cusp of implementing on some vessels, but we've also heard the first 055s may use COGAG first so IEPS is really a non issue. More importantly, a lack of IEPS doesn't explain why the PLAN would've wanted 052Ds instead of going directly to 055 because they could've just serially built 055s with COGAG without too much of a hitch, if IEPS was the problem.

Regardless of 055's propulsion situation, I hope you can understand that your idea of PLAN going for 052D is not related to their ability to develop propulsion for 055.

To be fair, the so-called military show in Phoenix TV as well as the Analyst Mr. Ma lacks credibility in general. Most senior military fans in China will consider that program to be entertaining.

IMHO, it is very hard to image Wuhan Ship Development Design Institute will come to an aggressive design (including IEP) for first batch 055. And don't be surprised if it looks similar to Type-54 DDG
