back to Type 055, yep, a view from the stern would be needed to know not just the total number of VLS cells ... but also if there's perhaps "one more red X" there:

The Flight III Burke will be produced in a number of sub-variants I suppose you could call them. The first sub-variant will only have the AMDR-S without the AMDR-X component. The X-band radar will be taken up by the X band SPQ-9B radar, and later ships will replace the SPQ-9B with a fixed multi-array AMDR-X.

The first picture you posted shows the initial Flight III variant with only AMDR-S, where the X band radar is the SPQ-9B which is present on the ship, but no fixed array AMDR-X
