054B/new generation frigate

If we assume that the VLS of both frigates are of the same dimension, then type 054B should be larger than in the picture.

Red lines are length and width of type 054A, yellow lines that of 054B.

I think the missile tubes amidships are a better comparison for size. Looking at those, the image scaling seems fine.

Is it possible that the VLS has simply changed dimensions? If so, is there any change in the missile complement that can be fielded?

Type 054A has way more padding around the VLS modules and the horizontal gap between 2 modules is also greater. You should have compared the dimensions of the individual cells, in which case the scale is mostly correct.

I redo again and yes you are right. The difference of the padding does make the overall dimension of the VLS on type 054A larger than that of 054B. So I was wrong in assuming both ships have VLS of same dimension.

And this creates a new question, since the VLS have different overall dimensions because of the padding but with same cell dimesion, would the VLS on type 054B be a new improved variant, and with new variant of HQ-16? I don't think there is affirmative answer but we shall keep watching.

I am assuming the comparison with 054+ (stretch)

054B is definitely much cleaner design. It seems that if PLAN wanted to have more VLS number, it is very possible by adding at least 16 or 24 more, but obviously PLAN didn't think its necessary at least for now

Wondering whether there is a "confirmation" from reliable sources that the VLS SAM would be the newest HQ-16 akin to HQ-16FE that has a maximum range of 160 km and altitude reach of 27 km. The HQ-16FE uses a dual-mode SARH and ARH seeker ??

I would be very surprised if it is not the case

I very much doubt 054A are somehow barred from using ARH missiles.
The question of course is what to do in opposite direction.
"Nothing" is also an answer, but a rather unusual one, ARH missiles often require SARH modes.
Right now it isn't immediately clear; just not enough visible arrays to cover all functions and bands.
Nope, that would be a rather retrograde as that would mean the main array has to stop to provide illumination. It's more possible for those 4 white strips to be the datalink channel for the missile. Similar system as Type 052C family.
Come to think of it - would it really be, if it's a backup/high power burn through mode?

Otherwise, there's literally no X band on the ship to work with, which has several negative implications (for instance, very low altitude search will suffer).

This way the whole picture adds up quite well.
