054/A FFG Thread II

more pictures from Hudong shipyard for the 4th unit of 054A. I'm kind of surprised that this isn't getting fitted out faster. It's been out since May and there is still a lot of scaffolding on the superstructures.

I don't suppose anyone here knows what the actual number of hulls PLAN will eventually have with the 054 series. With that said, is it possible they're nearing the ending of serial production of 054s? If so, maybe they are stretching the fitting time on this one to keep workers from being idle till the next project?

I have seen estimates of 12,18 and 22 stated on various sources but like everything with the PLA(N),we will just have to wait and see.

It is known for certain that there will be ten 054A, but the expectation was, based on the number of SEMT-Pielstick diesels ordered for this class, that there would be a total of 12.

However, a highly interesting Chinese text posted by A. Man on 2 September (# 694) states that there will be a fourth batch of four, or a total of 16 (plus the two original Type 054). The units of the fourth batch will allegedly be modified (Type 054B?), but the report that they will have YJ-62 SSM is perhaps not very convincing.

In brief, the long text says that the fourth batch is for the 9th Destroyer Flotilla/South Sea Fleet, and will comprise 572 and 574, built by Huangpu, and 573 and 575, built by Hudong.

As for the last six units of the original 12, it reports that 548 YIYANG from Huangpu and 549 CHANGZHOU from Hudong will go to the 6th Destroyer Flotilla/East Sea Fleet, followed by 546 and 547 from Hudong. 538 YANTAI (that is the unit launched 25 August 2010) and 550 from Huangpu, will both go to the 1st Destroyer Flotilla/North Sea Fleet.

The report seems generally credible: The names YIYANG and CHANGZHOU, as well as pennant number 548 of the former, are both known.

Earlier reporting was that two units would indeed go to the North Sea Fleet, but the reported pennant numbers were 546 and 547, which will now go to the East Sea Fleet.

Thr prediction that all will be in service by 2012 seems rather optimistic. I do not really see why they would stop there, a fifth batch of four by 2015 would appear reasonable – unless they want a dedicated ASW frigate to supplement this primarily AAW type.

This is a repeat of the text, which is simple enough to make a Google Translation intelligible:

Though very subtle, I do feel that the PLAN is serious about reforming into a major sea power. They first focused on submarines(ongoing), then there is a phase of mass producing type 022 houbei FACs, and now serial production of type 054s. One feels they are gradually moving up the food chain. A dedicated destroyer series is perhaps what's next?

The 4th 054A from HP shipyard just joined PLAN as number 548 and named Yiyang. Yiyang is in Hunan.

picture of the article on 054A joining PLAN ESF. It says that this ship received the name Yiyang in April of last year. The Guangzhou 427 factory (I assume that's HuangPu shipyard) received the order in 2006. It first begun sea trials in May of this year and now it has commissioned. Its standard displacement is 3600 ton (full is 4053 ton), 134 m long, 16 m wide and has maximum speed of 27 knots.

Shipyard No. 427 is Huangpu, Guangzhou. Other known shipyatd numbers are: 431 Huludao, 436 Jiangnan, Shanghai, and 438 Wuhan.

The commissioning of 548 YIYANG in the East Sea Fleet is partial confirmation of the information reproduced in post # 723 above.

I see that kind of posts on Chinese forums all the time. My advice don't accept anything until you see it coming out. It has been known for quite some time that the 7th and 8th 054A will be 548 and 549. I would not accept the number and name of the next 2 054A until it actually comes out.

The first real test of the validity of the information will be whether Huangpu Hull 5 puts on pennant no. 538, because that will be such an obvious break with previous numbering patterns.

They seem to be unconcerned by the fact that pt.no. 538 has been used before (like 546), no doubt due to the fact that these JIANGHU’s were more or less immediately handed over to the Egyptian Navy.
