054/A FFG Thread II

What about 052s and 051B? SLEP, scrap, CG service, or sale to friendly nation? Keep in mind, the lesser model variations, the cheaper on operational maintenance in the big picture.

I can't agree more, so probably those types as well. CG service will probably be the fate of the older and/or smaller platforms, the newer and/or larger ones I think will be upgraded though.

I think the interim technology vessels such as the 054s, 051Cs, 052Bs, and maybe even the Sovs will be upgraded (the Sovs a much slimmer chance, maybe retirement instead) once the production of new ships nears completion.
I believe the Sovs, the 051Cs and the 052Bs will all be kept in service for many years to come. All of them have very decent capabilities that would add nicely to any CSG, SAG, or ARG.

The older 051 and 052 are borderline. Probably be good for training, or for more green water, low intensity duties. The original 054s would make a good foreign nation sale IMHO.

The older Luda and older FFGs will either go coast guard or to the scrap yard in my estimation once all of the new models (056, 054A/B and 052C/D) are built in sufficient numbers.

Not a bad suggestion at all considering the current training ship, 544, is an older Jianghu IV. Throwing in 051B and 052s as training vessels would be more in line with the designs of the new ships being produced. Probably will also need more training ships as the navy grows.

Why are there so many of the membership here so eager to see the Type 052, Type 052B, Type 054 and the Sovs go ? There are currently still 10 Type 051 Luda class and 19 Type 053 Jianghu class floating in the PLAN. At the current rate of decommissioning it will take 5 to 7 years to get rid of all of those old ships. Then there are the 14 Type 053 Jiangwei class frigates in the PLAN that will be next. It will probably be somewhere in the beginning of the next decade before China can start to decommissioning some the Type 052, Type 052B, Type 054 and the Sovs.

Speaking for myself, it's not so much wanting to see all those old ships go but rather replaced by the newest designs, hopefully on a one-to-one basis! Though given the economic downturn I'm sure what would have been more of the latest 054 series will now be more of the 056 series, the latest 052s are probably an exception due to the need for AA escorts for the capital ships.

Not too sure about the 4 Sovs' ability to be seamlessly and cost-effectly upgraded and integrated into the network-centric China Navy.

ASW is a more serious problem for the PLAN, and resources could be better spent on their Silent Service and means to deal with other nation's submarine/ASW programs.
