Eh..... Jeff, it is a SAM..... AAM are launchd from high above in sky by those things with wings.

I believe this missile has the potential to be upgraded with a much longer range once new powerful and more efficient boaster is available to give it a longer coverage. I am thinking is this missile comparable to YJ-83 SSM size? If it is, once VLS YJ-83 ground attack version is available, it might be able to fit into the 32quad pack missile cannister of 054A frigate to give more versatile role for it.

Buk is 5.5m x 0.4m, C-803 is 7mx0.38m. So it can fit a snub nose C-803, if they ever make one.

for comparison:
RIM-66 Standard (SM-2MR) is 4.72x0.34m
RIM174 Standard (SM-6) is 6.55mx0.53m
HQ-9 is 6.8mx0.56m (0.7m booster stage)
S-300 Rif is 7.5mx0.5m
ESSM is 3.66x0.254m
Aster 15 is 4.2x0.18m
Aster 30 is 4.9x0.18m

So yeah, there definitely room for higher performance missiles given the size.

To quad pack, PL-12/SD-10 (3.93mx0.2m) derived missile [perhaps add a booster to extend range like SM-2ER] would be a good option. Probably this will be the way PLAN would go down, given the number of PL-12/SD-10 derived SAM shown at Zhuhai.

I did mean a surface launched missile. AAM is used used two ways, anti-air, and air to air. Most people see it and presume air to air, which is understandable, but is also not what I meant. SAM is what I meant.

I fully understand the other definition of AAM and all about those things flying high above in the sky with wings, but thanks for making that distinction and clarification...I will also correct the original post to be more clear.

Jeff, I knew what you meant, I was just trying a little light hearted joke, hope you don't mind.

It really is...almost looks the size of an SSM instead of an SAM.

Big for an SAM for sure.

It may be coz the missile is based on the Buk/Shtil missiles. The Shtil missiles (9M317/M/ME) based on the ships have the capablity to attack surface targets also. It is specified in the brochures of Shtil system and the max range is 25Km, where as for the targets like aircraft it is 50Km.
