I believe those ships with new white pennant numbers will be joining the rumoured new indpendent fleet escorting CV16, an experimental/training aircraft carrier combat group.

W will have to wait to see after CV16 completed her current sea trial if this is true, but I am willing to bet on my speculation.

I think that might be unlikely. The vessel is a Type 054 with HQ-7 SAM system instead of the area defence HQ-16 on newer Type 054A's. I don't think the Chinese navy will risk putting their carrier under the protection of the HQ-7 when they have so many HQ-16 vessels to use.

That 054 won't be the only escort for the Liaoning, with 052Cs, 054As and the Liaoning's own air wing, I don't think air defence will be a problem.

If they are establishing a new fleet for the carrier and this 054 is part of it, it's role will almost certainly be ASW, in which case an 054 would be one of the best ships the PLAN can put to that purpose with it's TAS.

It would certainly be a far more efficient use of ships than tasking an 054A for that task since you would want to position them carefully to maximise coverage from the HQ16s, while an ASW picket will need to be free to move to wherever a hostile sub is suspected to being.

Note: Of these 18 planned vessels, four, 531, 532, 550, and 575 are currently still building (October 2012) and it is rumored that 531 and 532 may well be an improved version, the Type 054B. If this is so, then there will be two Type 054s, 16 Type 054As, and the first two of an undetermined number of Type 054Bs. If 531 and 532 remain in the standard Type 054A configuartion, then there will be a total of 18 Type 054As.

You are right about 568 HENGYANG, I had forgotten to correct the name from CHAOHU (which will probably be the name of the first 903A).

You are wrong about 571 YUNCHENG, which was actually named HENGSHUI.

The word now is that PLAN has ordered another four 054A (nos. 17-20), all from Hudong. If Hudong goes on building one per year, they will only be completed by 2017. I am sure they will speed that up, though, likely completing all four by the end of 2015.

Anyone keeping track of which vessels get the black numbering scheme and which get white? Is it random or only a certain fleet gets them for now?
