We will know in the next few months the status of Type 054A production, if it continues or a Type 054B comes out

If Type 052D can come out so soon after Type 052C surely Type 054B can but we will have to wait and see

Why are there so many of the membership here so eager to see the Type 052, Type 052B, Type 054 and the Sovs go ? There are currently still 10 Type 051 Luda class and 19 Type 053 Jianghu class floating in the PLAN. At the current rate of decommissioning it will take 5 to 7 years to get rid of all of those old ships. Then there are the 14 Type 053 Jiangwei class frigates in the PLAN that will be next. It will probably be somewhere in the beginning of the next decade before China can start to decommissioning some the Type 052, Type 052B, Type 054 and the Sovs.

My replies about phase out of 051B and 052s are in the context of 5 years out when assuming all these predicted production schedules of 056s, 052Cs, and 052Ds come to fruition. I'm on the fence with the 052Bs and Sovs. 054 can be sold off.

Aside from quantative numbers, one new 052D will more than replace one Luda. The 056s will come close to matching the Jianghus. It's definitely way more than the 037s which is why I don't view 056s replacing 037s directly. Not every old model needs to be replaced by a separate model number. Build enough 056s and one can argue it replaces the 037s and 053s. At least with the Ludas, Jianghus, and Jiangweis, there were serial built. The 051B, 052s, and even 054s are in such low numbers, I see them presenting more inefficiencies within the fleet than their worth once the modern fleet grows to a decent size 5 years out.

Not too sure about the 4 Sovs' ability to be seamlessly and cost-effectly upgraded and integrated into the network-centric China Navy.
Well, there wont be any CE capabilities, that's for sure.

But they have decent combat systems of their own and if commanded properly by the task force commander and his staff, they would perform more than adequately, IMHO.

I think the 052Bs, the 051Cs and the Sovs will be arund for many years to come. That's eight decent, blue water DDGs they can use to augment their more modern forces, or to form up as escorts for ARGs or other duties.

I wonder about the condition of the Sovs. You do not hear much about them, or see them out at sea much.

If they have been well maintained, they will remain potent vessels...despite some of their inefficiencies, particularly in CandC integration.

The original 054 is still newer, larger, and more capable than the older Luda, Jianghu, and Jiangwei class ships. Both 054's were deployed to Anti piracy patrols in Somalia last year. I don't foresee them being sold any time soon.

As for the 051B, that's a... PR ship.

He doesnt appear to be impressed with what he sees, IMO.
You interpret a stern countenance as not being "impressed with what he sees"? Seriously? It looks to me like you are projecting your own mind into his body. To me he just looks like he's having a bad day, or he doesn't want to be there, or he naturally looks emotionless to begin with.

He's there for talks to go over what the Obama strategic pivot is all about and how it's not meant to "contain" China, may be that thankless task is getting him down.

When you're moving 60% of the largest navy on the planet to some else's doorstep there is only so many ways you can say "don't worry about it, it's not you, it's me!" :)

Or maybe as SECNAV he's had to review so many ships, one more more less, it's just another day at the office for him! After all the US Navy's already set foot on a 54A off somalia, may if they let him on the Liaoning he'd be more excited! :)

I wrote about this in one of my entries.

There are serious questions about some of these interim platforms. They will probably get special roles, but we will see what they are.

As for 052, they just got SLEP'd. And 051B will probably get it in a couple of years. After that, they will probably have another 10 years of service.
