Interesting that in 2011 we had

1 x Type 052C DDG launched in 2010
2 x Type 052C DDG launched 2011
1 x Type 052C and 2 x Type 052D launched in 2012 so that's 3 x DDG in 2012 alone
1 x Type 052D in 2014
And they could in theory get 2 x Type 052D launched in 2014

That's on average 1.8 DDG per year in the last 5 years

If the left hall was pumping the number would be 2.8 DDG per year

My $0.02 is that, it's possible to upgrade the 052C with newer technologies found on 052D and later ships. But a direct conversion is probably out of the question (Jeff has already listed the reasons).

As an AAW DDG, the most important part of the ship is the sensor package and VLS system (plus missiles contained within). There is no reason why you cannot replace the 052C's VLS system with a newer one, but the Chinese Navy has so far been unwilling to commit to such expensive upgrade. Their preference is to build new ships.

There are also several examples of retrofitting VLS systems into ships that did not previous have VLS cells. Examples include Spruance-class destroyers, Adelaide-class frigates, Rajput class destroyers, Delhi-class destroyers, etc. Consider, between installing new VLS system into a ship that already has (older) VLS system, versus one that does not, the first case is likely to cost less.

I think this topic has already been discussed in the past. Without speculating on the reason, I'd point to past example where the last 2 Jiangwei II class frigates were launched in 2004 AFTER the newer 054 Frigate was launched in 2003. The shipyards delivered exactly what the Chinese Navy ordered.

Yep............D4 launching appears imminent!
Doesn't seem that long ago D4 was in modules outside.
The Chinese have obviously stepped up a gear with the build times of their Destroyer programme................and in relation to this, and with other Chinese naval shipbilding programmes.............i have a general question.

Does anyone know if at the Chinese shipyards, the naval vessels are worked on 5, 6 or 7 days a week, and also are they worked on during the night?..............as i have seen pictures of Chinese vessels in naval construction halls with the lighting on...........but then again this just could be for security measures!

I am sure they work 7 days a week and 24 hours a day in 3 shift ... it shouldn't be any problem for China ... they are very very hard working people

I dont think that anyone would be much productive or happy with this kind of weekly schedule. People need to rest, you know. Particulary in a job that requires qualified personnel and precision.
