Literrally every navies have been based on a "three tier structure". There's nothing special from China about this topic.

Isn't the Type 054A good enough for ASW ? Also the development of a carrier fleet and extended anti-submarine air assets have greatly improved the Chinese capabilities in this regard.

Comparing with other navies the Chinese may want to keep the three tier structure simply because of cost concerns.
One of the main issues China has is lack of anti-submarine warfare capabilities. A new frigate class which is dedicated to the role would go a long way in addressing this.

China's maritime geography is simply too militarily disadvantageous so it must always maintain a numerically large "garrison" force to secure the seas within the 1st island chain, they also need a significant "forward defense" force if they want to contend the seas between the 1st and 2nd island chains in order to truly secure the seas within the 1st island chain. In order to do so economically it makes sense for them to have a near seas hi-lo and far seas hi-lo ship types.

It may eventually make sense to combine the near-hi and far-lo ship types into a single one if China sees a higher threat environment and is willing to invest more in such a capability. AA and missile defense needs will be primary drivers for such an investment. The carriers and AA surface combatants would be more equal escorts for each other rather than necessarily the latter escorting the former.

Let's continue the discussion here

DDG 131 Taiyuan, one of the new batch of Type 052D, doesn't have enough photos taken. Note the Type 1130 CIWS, the boom less radar panels and the capsule shaped ESM. Below, a new picture of the Dalian shipyard.

DL like to do double launches

We see the empty slots

No doubt like last time the Type 055 and Type 052DL will be floated and brought into the position from where the recent DDG were launched

We will then see keel of the next units being laid

The older radar is a 2 x 4 or eight element AESA, the new one is now a 2 x 6 for 12 elements. I don't think its a passive radar only, even though it may support a passive mode. Well...I think it might actually be 24 elements, but its back to back with 12 elements per face. This means it can double the rate of updates with the same rate of rotation of its predecessor.

HK-JM2 appears to me as also a two faced back to back radar, but the frequency for one side is different from the other. The one with fewer more spaced elements have a longer frequency than the other, the face with the shorter band has four elements in the vertical for vertical scanning, or emit four lobes for multipath height finding. The brochure is not telling the whole story, the side with the two element row is the 2D, but the side with the four element rows might be 3D.

In my opinion the new radar on the 052DG(?) is a new design from the previous ones, even though it still operates by the same principles as the others. Like the previous I think its only 2D.

You were spot on on about the new radar being double-sided

According to Chinese wiki the difference between length of the earlier 052D's and the latest batch is 4 metres (156m vs 160m)

Since I am obsessed with naval helicopters I wonder if China ever explored the possibility of adding in a Flexible mission space (FMS) like the Type 26

Adding in 2 dual hangers with such a mission bay would mean 3 x Z18 sized helicopters

Might be difficult on Type 052D but with the Type 055 that would have been great

That’s only 1 less helicopter than the Type 071 LPD

A formation of 4 x Type 055 would therefore be able to carry 12 x Z18 sized helicopters.
