I thought it was the handover ceremony as well until I saw the CNO Adm. Wu (circled). He certainly wouldn't have shown up for a mere handover.

This is crazy. A whole new ship the first of her class commissioned just 6 months after her launch. They wouldn't have the time to rigorously test all the new systems yet. She is commissioned even before 152 Jinan the "old" Type 052C that was launched 9 months earlier !

This is not just a handover. As pointed out by another member, the General of the PLAN ia present, and the word the official news report is 'entering service'.

It's not a big a leap of capability between the 052C and 052D as compared to the 052 and the 052C, so you have a lot of institutional knowledge to quickly draw up a crew. (The 052C delay could be due to money or some other reason).

actually, it's 1 year and 6 months. Maybe they are handing it over earlier than they have with 052C so they can start training with it, developing operations/tactics and such. I'm sure when 152 and 153 joins, they will be far more combat ready.

They had the interim 052B class, but I would agree with you. Even the leap from 052B to 052C was greater than 052C to 052D.
