I know it is a gross simplification, but I cannot escape the nagging feeling, that the difference between hot and cold launch systems is one of expectation.
Cold launch is slower, but enables more options and and can be reloaded with more complex missions. Hot launch is faster but by its nature more limited.

The expectation to which I refer is whether there is any likelihood of; in a real major engagement, still being around for a second salvo, or whether it is simply a frantic race to get everything fired off quickly before it is too late!

I suspect only the long range missiles would be cold launch when time isn't so much of the essence. The MR air defense missiles would probably be hot launch for rapid reaction when enemy missiles are finally closing to within the radar horizon.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Now I can't resist to say something really dumb: I have feeling that each time I see a picture of a Chinese warship, the sea water is of different color :) (and that color often seems strange to me, but hey, I live in a land-locked country LOL) at one point I was thinking if it couldn't be because of the Yellow River, but fortunately I know Shanghai is close to Yangtze River ... could please somebody explain me those different colors (but if this post is too stupid, just delete it, no problem :)

I would say it depends where the ship was at the time the pic was taken. If further up the river, the water is more brown and murky due to the silt.
