It almost looks like this ship is on fire. Bad engines...

It's a drill. Those are fireproof suits and the red tanks are fire extinguishers. Probably they are practicing putting out a fire on the flight deck, possibly on the helo itself.
I thought it would be routine for the fireman to be ready in time with high risk of fire (the helo might crash).

A prominent PLA-watcher has said DDG 173 suffered a fault with one of her gas turbines, which precluded her from taking part in the exercises with Russia but had no effect on her cruising capabilities since she cruises with diesel. I don't recall how credible he is at the moment, someone pitch in and remind me if possible.

Additionally, he says DDG 173 is currently back at base, waiting for a suitable time to return to the shipyard to conduct repairs, with plans to implement small upgrades since she's going to the shipyard anyway. He also says the ship is still within warranty period so the shipyard bears full responsibility but I'm not sure if he's joking or not.

Better to experience and patch up teething issues now than later. They may push 052C/Ds for more distant deployments rather than leaving it to the 054As, and give their systems a good long workout.

The scales have tipped and turned.

It used to be, ten years ago, that during the Sino-Russian exercises, that the Russians had more ships and better ships.

Now, the PLAN has far many more modern and adept destroyers and frigates. More numerous, more modern.

An amazing turn of events and the PLAN and the Chinese industry are to be recognized and congratulated on it too.

Russia stopped building big ships, while China was only getting started, and older ships can only last you for so long before they need to be scrapped. In the future Russia should just buy destroyers and size up ships from China instead.

Student has indeed became the master.
