At most maybe it can only support some masts, EO sensors and a couple of HMG mounts.
Well, yes and no. Before the mod there were 4 decoy launchers in that area behind the Shtil. Although close to the board.

After MLU, #167, #168 and #169 are just large frigate in weapon configuration wise, also in radar and sensors. We shall see if #115 and #116 will face similar MLU in next few years.

I'm an avid advocate for any PLAN destroyers which precede the 052Cs to be MLU-ed to become essentially large frigates or frigate leaders. This includes the 051Cs.

If the 051C DDGs (i.e. #115 and #116) can be MLU-ed with Chinese systems in the coming years, then hopefully one major aspect of the MLU would be swapping out those 8-cell S-300 rotary launchers and replacing them with the H/AKJ-16 VLS cells for the HHQ-16s.

The two rotary launchers in front of the bridge can be replaced with two 8-cell VLS modules, while the four rotary launchers in front of the helicopter landing pad can be replaced with four 8-cell VLS modules = 46 VLS cells in total.

Besides, those eight YJ-83 launchers can be replaced with eight YJ-62 launchers.

Seriously underweaponed.

#168 has been refitted as a large ocean going frigate in the guise of its former self in destroyer. They probably will just let that mostly empty deck as it is unless they find something useful from type 054B that can be retro-fitted to that deck on #168 and #169.

I don't think they'd bother to upgrade the 051C in any serious way.

yeah, doesn't seem serious unless they start to install new AESAs during these MLUs instead of hand-me down type 382s.

Find it difficult to comprehend the rationale behind the MLUs for the 051B, 052B, and SOVs (including the first two 054s). While I know that members of this community may come up with various scenarios and logics, but given the scope of these DDGs, the current MLU campaigns are a waste of funds, time and resources .

It may, however, be suitably equipped with more VLS and other armament systems as well as the newest radars, sensors, and equipment (AESA panels etc.), which would undoubtedly supplement the 052Ds and PLAN for the First Island Chain (at least 2nd line of defense with 054As).

Seeing the recent MLU drive the fate of 051Cs/052Cs are not bright too :(. Its fair to say they are turning these DDGs to FFGs. We are talking 17 ships (051B/051Cs/052Bs/052Cs/SOVs) along with two 054s, not many countries have that many ships in their entire fleet.

Yeah but the MLU they made did improve the capabilities of these ships. And more importantly they made them in line with the existing ship equipment. Which means it won't be hard to resupply these ships in combat since they use the same weapons as the frigates. Instead of the previous mishmash of cloned French and Russian weapon systems.

Warship design is not about stuffing as much firepower as possible into every space possible, the same as why soldiers don’t carry multiple rifles and pistols for combat.

If you to see all the problems and issues that comes with overstuffing ships with weapons, just look up the Israeli Saar5.

While people like to focus on the more obvious weapons fit changes for the upgrades, the biggest value added elements from the MLU would be upgrades to the electronics and software for sensors, CIC, networking and comms etc. There could also be significant quality of life improvements for the crew, which is all too often overlooked but can have a massive impact on the combat and even general performance of warships.
