re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

I suppose if the attack involves multiple threat specific from one direction gun base CIWS may indeed have advantage in that if the wall of leads missed their first intended target there is still chance that they might hit other targets nearby.

The benefit of missile based CIWS is more flexibility in 360-degree coverage, versus a gun based CIWS is usually LOS only. Unless if the gun fires some kind of guided munitions that can make turns, it won't be as good as a missile based system. However, a hot stream of 30mm DU rounds do make excellent last-line defense.

btw, those are not the 5th and 6th. Those are old photos of the 4th 052C from June. Please check back to see that. Also, please compare what you have to what I posted a few days ago to see where the 5th and 6th should be at right now.

I think in PLAN testing, they've found gun based CIWS to be better than something like Kashtan that combines missiles with gun. It could be a guidance issue. I'm not sure. But it seems from looking at Varyag that they do believe it's even better to have separate gun and missile CIWS. In effect, that forms two lines of wall.
Gun based CIWS with their multiple 30 mm rounds can fend off multiple supersonic missiles as shown by Goalkeeper CIWS.

one thing i dont get about USN is that they made 27 Ticonderoga class of missile cruisers first one commisioned in 1983 and by 2005 they had already decommisioned 5 of them>? why did they decommision 5 of them so quickly surely the life of these 10,000 ton monsters is not under 2 decades?
out of 27 today only 22 remain, waste of alot of resources i think could have been upgraded

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

The first five did not have the VLS, they used twin arm launchers fore and aft. It was decided that the cost to convert them, particularly once the Areligh Burke class was coming out in such numbers, outwieghed keeping them on.

There are now over 60 Burke destroyes and the later class of those are close to 10,000 and they are talking about a Class III Burke now that would, in effect, become the replacements for the Tico cruisers. We shall see on that though.

There were some structural issues with the early ships, you can check the wiki entry for more info.

Pictures of the 3rd 052C. This could be 052C returning from its initial sea trials or this is from before the sea trials. My guess is probably the former. While these are good photos, I think we will see more up close pictures of this ship in coming days (like VLS and the minor changes on Type 730), not that I'm expecting any real physical changes.
