Well they were talking about how PLAN was founded by KMT defector and how a combine big fleet mean all of the navy will defect.

Where did this come from and what does it have to do with anything about the 052?

He's saying that the KMT used to have one big fleet, but then defection caused them to lose a major part of their fleet in one go, which is why the PLAN is divided into three fleets

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

If I recall correctly, in the official 60th Anniversary DVD of the PLAN, it was mentioned that the PLAN was originally made up of defectors from the KMT naval forces. The strange thing mentioned in the DVD was that KMT combined their fleets (think it was 4 or 5) into 1 for better command and control. Unfortunately, when defections happened, the KMT also lost most of their fleet. To prevent the same thing from happening, CCP promptly divided the naval assets into 3 fleets. And they have stayed that way ever since.

I'm not so sure. If anything, more fleets will be formed instead of fewer fleets (compared to the current 3). This will create more competition within the PLAN, which should lead to better innovation.

KMT had 3 Coastal Defense Fleets and 1 River Defense Fleet before CCP went across the Yangtze River. The 2nd Coastal Defense Fleet grouped together to prevent the deflection of individual ships. But later the 2nd Coastal Defense Fleet deflected to CCP as a whole.

You got the facts wrong. The theory that you and the other fellow seem to like is just your imagination.

Anyone with the basic knowledge of Chinese naval history will know that China's has preferred the 3-fleets structure since the late 19th century.

Same sh*t that people trying to make up from, when President Hu meets Gates and "can't remember such thing" on J-20 project.

You know, we can not kill those people, but we can ignore them.

Since when this thread is about Chinese naval history? I don't understand how refitting Type 52s can make people arguing about Chinese naval history for the last two pages!

Back to the refitting, I think all the modifications are just about right. Other wise, they would rather scrap them reuse the engines on two completely new ships. Sure, with the current upgrade they have only self defence capabilities. But at least they are much better than before. Just think of them as dedicated ASW ships.

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

What surprised me in the Luhu upgrade was that the Type 730 CIWS was mounted ON TOP of the helicopter hangar and not lower down.

As they are larger and more capable CIWS than the twin-37 mm mounts they replace they should also be considerably heavier.

The extra top weight would increase the ships' instability were it not for the removal of much of the even heavier (obsolete!) long-range surface search radar.

The removal of that system (and others) more than compensated for the greater top-weight of the Type 730's.

I agree that maintaining the HQ-7's was a little disappointing but overall, it still remains a capable short-range, air-defense missile system.

What should be done is to improve the storage, launch and handling of the HQ-7 system - think vertical-launched Crotale Naval.

The associated air-search and fire-control radars are virtual copies of the FFG 054 systems.

That said, it could also be supplemented by mounting the FL-3000 system.

Will the PLAN use this vessel primarily as an ASW destroyer?

That question should be answered by modifications to the sonar suite it carries.

Hopefully that will also include the CY-x? ASW weapons.

well, I find it interesting that they put two Type 730 CIWS on there. Looks like they also put the latest version of ASW rocket and multi-purpose rocket launcher on there.

I still think they could replace the forward missile launcher with a FL-3000N. It would improve the air defense all the more.

They used the same layout for CIWS on 051B and F-22P frigates. Maybe that is not a bad layout as we may think.

wide coverage in the back arch and the side.

in front you have HHQ-7 and 100mm.

it will work in the confined space in Bohai and East China Sea region, where it will be undercover of shore based aviation most of time and 051Cs.

Its more of a command ship and ASW ship.
