The Iver Huitfeldt is really should be called Destroyer, it's almost 7K tonnes. You should compare it with 052C/D

If you feel the Iver Huitfeldt class is too large by displacement for comparison, then we can use the French/SG Formidable class frigates instead. For the price that RN paid to upgrade their OH Perry (~$360 million per ship), they could've ordered brand new Formidable class frigates from France.

In terms of cost/benefit, I'd lean toward buying new ships at those prices.

Rumour has it that there would be a final number of 6 052C and 6 052D, before the PLAN move on to the next gen destroyer.

So that means there are no major difficulties with the next gen ship and they should be expected soon in a couple of years(?)

I agree. It does seem pretty extrodinarily expensive...but they did also have some major changes to make.

Bottom line is, they had these vessels and their training, logistics, spare parts, weapons, etc were all geared up for them...and the entire thing was a stop gap until the Hobarts come along.

IMHO, after spending so much, they should keep these around for several years and augment/compliment the Hobarts. With the new comms and data link, perhaps they can even work out CE capabilities for these from the Hobarts.

Well that's the thing here

We have 6 x Type 052C that's

SSF
170 and 171

ESF
Will get 4 x Type 052C thats 150-153

Now we have Type 052D

The first 2 x Type 052D can go to SSF as 172 and 173 to complete the DDG flotilla and another 4 x Type 052D can go to NSF as 117-120

So that would make 6 units of Type 052D

Which means 3 Flotillas of DDG or 12 units but Type 052D could continue to establish a second DDG flotilla at ESF which would increase the production line for the Type 052D

But a DDG can not charge high sea states at 30+knots like a cruiser can so I think a larger cruiser style warship will appear in PLAN pretty soon

If China makes a carrier most likely it will take a 10,000 ton cruiser with it, having said that the Areigh Burke can clock 30 knots at high sea states with ease its very well balanced DDG

according to november 2012 issue of kanwa, kanwa interview a japanese radar expert on his opinion 52D radar system.
he believe the 4 original 52C radar system use GaAs T/R MMIC circuit. while the newer 052D uses GaN circuit.whish gave the 052D radar system highter bandwidth and beam agility.
(the technology could also applied to KJ-2000 and kj-200)
he also suspect 052C radar do not possess ATBM capability, while newer version the 052D carry this capability.

That article also said, IIRC, that 052C or even the 052D still has a long way to go in terms of automation and material science to be at par with the kind of AEGIS DDGs that fielded by US, S.Korea and Japan.
