Against missiles, the gun fire control radar would be tracking the missile, determining its bearing and speed, and the fire control computer would be taking the data, and then computing in anticipation where the missile would be ahead of time. The gun would be aimed and positioned ahead and in anticipation of the missile. This is called lead targeting. Against a faster supersonic target, you're only making allowances for the increased speed, so instead of aiming at point B, its pointing at C further down the track.
