thanks bro, are we sure it's 4th CVN? or sister ship of Fujian? they seem to run in pairs...001, 002 skijump; 003 flattop, non nucleus....004?
There was never any pair.

001: Ukrainian
002: Completely domestic built, using modified Ukrainian design.
003: Catapult based, all new domestic design.

Every ship is pretty much unique thus far.

002 had many modifications from islands, engine, weapon system. It is like Galil vs AK-47.

Again, there have been neither news nor direct indications from official sources.

However, there have been circumstantial hints, rumors and mentions which hinted that to be the case (including this particular mention by pop3 all the way back in April 2022).

Besides, with the noticeable lack of any procurement tender offer/announcements for the construction of another conventionally-powered carrier as of now (should the PLAN choose to proceed with the rest of the 2nd stage of Project 048 after Fujian), and judging by the anticipated/expected progress of CVN development across certain naval institutes in China - Given that the process from drawing-up blueprints until the commissioning of any aircraft carrier can take many years, it does make more sense for China to just proceed with a CVN instead of a CV at this point.

Let alone there are actually more things to learn, refine, improve and adapt for naval aviation operations for China, with Fujian's introduction actually providing a huge boost for said efforts. So why not just give it some more time as China further refines her next carrier into something that is actually the best that China can build and most accepted by everyone involved before starting construction?

Also, while a huge carrier fleet expansion is very much necessary for China, now isn't really the time yet. The PLAN still needs plenty more of newer CGs, DDGs, FFGs, AOE/AORs and SSNs + time to build up the best naval aviation operational capabilities that she can muster before more CSGs (or even CBGs) can be formulated.

Of course, this is just my own inference on the matter.

No.

In fact, don't ever view the PLAN in the same lens as the IJN. China is following her own pace and progress of development and growth, and this include her aircraft carriers.

Also, refer @TK3600's reply above.

004 is likely the first nuclear carrier. A lot of new technology and training needed. Chances are 004 will too be a stand alone. 005 and 006 could be a pair. That is when the technology mature enough.
thanks bro for qualifying "likely", my huntch is 004 would be non-nuclear
