Most peoples from formerly colonised nations dislike being told what to do by patronising westerners. China just needs to live up to the promises of its trade/investment relationships with developing nations: win-win cooperation, respect for sovereignty and dignity of even small nations, negotiation in good faith regarding concerns that arise over time (e.g. making use of local labour where possible). It is if and when those things break down that western "concern trolls" have their opportunity.

Is it surprising? Indians only care about the headlines that'll they're replacing China and they'll go as far as to pay Westerners in high positions to just say India is a better place than actually living up to it.

Typical story of moving manufacturing in India. The biggest problem with many Indians today is that they think that they've made it. That India is already the finished product. Once some Western companies started shifting some production from China to India, then they think that India has won. They have an entitled mindset, and the results shows.

Just look at how they talk:
Tech entrepreneur and academic Vivek Wadhwa said that it will likely take three years or so for Indian suppliers to be capable of the kind of volume production needed to make a noticeable dent in Chinese production.

Provincial governments “are bending over backwards to bring industry in, and they will do what China has done”, he said. “But, these are baby steps. Apple is now getting its feet on the ground, learning what does and doesn’t work . .. Give it three years and you’ll see it scaling up.

Can Apple wait 3 years? Can Indian suppliers really do it in 3 years? Or is this yet another Indian promise? India was supposed to have zero poverty by 2020, boasted Abdul Kalam. If Apple still trusts Indian timetables, and goals, then good luck to Apple.

He also suggested that Apple, too, will need to adapt – especially when it comes to dealing with the bureaucratic government.

Again, this is yet another Indian reminder to Apple that its India who sets the standards, not Apple. If Apple don't like it, then it has to learn to 'jugaad' aka: make do with what India is giving you. India won't go out of its way like what China did, to work on improving itself to meet Apple's standards. India is already perfect. It is always you, the foreigners, who needs to learn the art of jugaad.

So Apple has the freedom to make a choice. Apple either learns to jugaad and lower its QC standards to Indian standards, or it just can return to China and maintain Apple standards.

Apple is smart enough to know their limits. There’s a, what do they call it, quid pro quo between China and Apple. Apple acts like a good boy and China does not kick their ass
