It is quite clear that they are looking to divide the country in half and cut off access to the sea.
Putin called Macron today. According to a French official, their analysis shows that Putin's "ambition" is to take control of all of Ukraine

"a clear message (Putin to Macron)
-
It is intended to pressure Zelensky to come to the table...
... and he should.
Terms are getting worse by the day."

Look like they will be pushing way farther than the Dnieper river, getting the south to cut maritime access bu it look like they want both banks of the river, they want to get all hydroelectric plants and control water supply ? I don't see them getting the west without enormous sacrifice. They are getting supply out there.

I think Putin would want all of Ukraine if he can manage it. Otherwise it’s a North-South Korea situation and that’s not what anyone would willingly want on their doorstep.

You should look up a map of Ukraine and how it’s biggest cities are distributed.

Other than Lviv, there’s very little of worth or note in western Ukraine from a strategic POV. That means if Ukraine looses everything east of Kyiv inclusive, there isn’t anything left to defend or sustain an army.

Urban fighting is the Ukraine army’s only chance. Trying to stop the Russians in open field combat will just result in them getting absolutely obliterated by massed artillery at minimal cost to the Russians. If they loose the major cities, it’s game over. And all the major cities bar Lviv are in eastern and central Ukraine, where the bulk of the fighting is currently going on.

You've been honest so far so I'll ask you this:

If Russia was developed and rich, and the US and EU was bankrupt and poor, how would these Ukrainians feel about this Russian invasion?

The Russian invasion would not be welcomed probably at all now, even if the Russians were rich and the West poor. The events of 2014 pulled together Ukraine as being antirussian. There was a narrative in the Right Bank that Russia was an evil oppressor. This was prior to even 2014. It was not accepted Ukrainewide. After the events of 2014, it has. A lot of people don't appreciate how much of a feeling of a backstab Ukrainians had over the Donbas and Crimea. The feel of it is very much Cain and Abel, if you are familiar, whether it is right or wrong.

That said, a world where the West was poor and Russia rich would have had Ukraine wanting to join Russian based institutions, trade blocks, etc. I doubt Russia would have invaded at all then. it's a wildly different world than our own. It would be fun to think about how it came about in an alternate history sort of way, but not what we have today.

On a personal note, we have extracted the family from Ukraine. They are in Europe now and we are trying to get them away from the border region. In all the darkness, there is a minute ray of relief for me. They lost everything, again, in a decade, but they are and will live.

I am glad that your family is safe and sound Hope solution can be found and this carnage will end. People need to compromise and set aside past grudges. There is no right or wrong in conflict but reality on the ground. Ukraine should accept reality and Russia should end this war.

Anyone following the war with a keen eye will give Ukraine little chance. However I have no idea what Putin is going to do after 'winning'. Any attempts at occupation or a puppet government will be met with stern resistance considering Ukrainians are now overwhelmingly anti-Russian. Conducting mass genocides will also result in heavier sanctions and opposition in Russia. I'm just not sure any sort of puppet government would hold, it seems extremely unlikely. Whats the exit for Putin?
