I am going to stick with the notion of the Russian paratroopers on an intel recce, as a quick look at the map shows that they were following a path that came in from the recently seized Customs post at Uspenka. The road goes through the current Southern Cauldron, but is the shortest and most direct road from Russia to the City of Donetsk. I do think they were path finding for supplies or aid of some description.

recce is still no excuse though. bottom line is russia would rather that this didnt happen.

Sending in foot mobiles to cross-border recon is typical thing anybody would do, just nobody in their right mind would openly brag about it, especially so when it's a conflict zone across the fence and by some elements you're involved.

So, it's back to the old saying "it's fine so long as you don't get caught". Russia got a bad roll on the dice that's what.

Nothing there yet, according to Cassad, and he doesn't expect it either. But this is where Azov batallion ended up, and apparently there is or was a sort of a panic in the city, with oponents of the militias trying to get out. It looks like the Kiev side has pretty much lost hope for holding on to Novoazovsk, though they are still there.

My two penneth for what it is worth, is that the DNR/NRA press have been downplaying this move and that it is a big force and Mariupol is the target.

Two reasons

1) If not why bother with the Drive so far South?
2) Look at the map. The main direct road from Mariupol to Donetsk is no more than half the length of the line from Donetsk to the East Russian Border in Lugansk, which had to be defended in JulY.

Take Mariupol, secure the main road and you have neutralised further threat from the South. This means that you can then push West of Donetsk to put another front out of Arty Range and then with those fronts secure, commit to the tough street fighting of retaking the Industrial Conurbation to the North back all the way to Slavyansk.

There is definitely fighting to the west of Mariupol. Rebels don't have enough strength to take the city, but they are attempting to cut main road going along the coast

Here is video with subtitles from Ilovaysk (25th of August) . Rebels are holding the town, while Ukrainian army tries to break out from encirclement.

Recognition as a "nation state" is in fact what they wish but the critical factors are in the next article of the treaty
So the question is does the the Donetsk Peoples Republic match the list? Yes they do. Where AQ and the Taliban in Afghanistan do not abide the conventions, the DPR actually matches all the requirements for there soldiers to be considered POWs if captured. If they match as so does the Ukrainian government Forces then by all rights the conventions are valid. Particularly if the DPK and Nevurussia wish any recognition. By violating the conventions they first place reduce the chances of any greater recognition, second risk there POWs being placed in the same if not worse and third risk wider war crime indictments. The conventions were written after incidents of captured troops being paraded finding them selves attacked by lynch mobs

Your analysis is wrong because currently Ukrainian government considers rebels as terrorists. They even call this war anti-terror operation. Any rebel caught by Ukrainian forces will not get POW status (with accompanying rights like visits from Red Cross etc ... ) . He will be simply put to prison and charged with terrorism - serious offense with harsh punishment.

Government of Novorussia (DPR, LPR or whatever they call themselves now) certainly is not a signatory of Geneva conventions . I agree they should abide them , especially if they want international recognition. But they are not obliged to respect them, especially if other side (Ukrainian government) refuses to give same rights to rebel combatants.

In a current situation, proper thing to do would be to put pressure on both sides to respect conventions, since both sides want to appear civilized (unlike ISIS for example) . But that would undermine Ukrainian position, because they don't want to give this conflict status of civil war - that would entail international involvement, negotiations and some sort of recognition for rebels .
