Huangpu is still working on the modification of its first 056-596

It's quite amazing that they are making these modifications on these ships ie redesigning some parts of the ship when its already in full production ! Why do they need those openings in the back anyway ? Wouldn't it be better just to do away with it ?

every time I look at this, I though what's the point of call this coast guard. But then, even the US is going in this direction.

The question that comes to mind is where's the line where needs are addressed by a Coast Guard vs a Navy? I think this line is different for different countries.

It's for port side logistics. Other vessels have moving panels to close up the openings when out at sea but I think that increases production cost and may be an item the Chinese Navy felt wasn't cost justified.

I think you need to look at the type of coastline being protected. In the case of Russia's Far East, especially its legacy as the Front Line of the Cold War, you can imagine quite easily why you would want a force that is Beefy and at the very least paramilitary. The photo title of Border Guard is also quite revealing as to the type of tasks it sees itself undertaking.

In a tense and potentially volatile environment you will often see surprisingly powerful ships passed off as Civilian or Paramilitary, in an attempt to maintain strength without overly upsetting security and the local balance by designating them as military.

I see an old fashioned library. They can save space and weight by going to electronic books. My wife and I are doing so to be prepared for the next time we move house.

That library is likely just a single bookshelf and probably smaller than many private libraries individuals keep.

Electronic books are cool, but you need an Ereader for them, and I do not see the PLAN handing every one of their sailors a brand new IPad when they enlist.

I suppose they could just have a few pad in that room. It's not like every crew member suddenly all wants to read a book.

Btw some high schools here in NZ required that every student enrolled get themselves an ipad. Crazy...they are never gonna pay attention in class.

In places like those, most of the books are mostly for decoration (fill the shelves with all those official publications and party papers, manuals and stuff secured away somewhere else), besides Chinese overall still prefers "physical" books over electronic publications. Also, by the decor that looks like officer's corner.

I agree with that, btw ipads isn't the only game in town. Especially in China, fairly decent tablet computers can be had for as little as $50.

Good e-readers can be bought in Dutch shops for about $100 and they are all made in China. I imagine PLAN could buy them for the equivalent of $10 or $20. Sailors need to have vast amounts of information at their fingertips and the printing ( and reprinting when information changes ) of all kinds of manuals and tables has been a significant expense in navies ( and airlines and many other organisations ). Using electronic documents will likely save much more money than the cost of providing everyone with a decent e-reader. That way they have the information at their fingertips literally compared with having to go to a shelf with books.
Btw after getting rid of some 4000 books we still have more books than are shown in this library.
