Actually I looked into this further and it's a lot funnier than the headlines:
- US didn't just ban new DJIs models, they banned all "foreign" drones and drone components including batteries, controllers, motors, comms, etc. that includes Europe, Japan and Korea.
- EVERY US drone company relies on foreign drone components, even Skydio which lobbied for the law relies on "Japaneses" batteries (that are made in China)
By allowing sale of existing DJI models while banning all foreign drone parts, they effect just killed the entire US drone industry while giving Chinese drones including DJI a total monopoly.
There is a clause that allows exemptions, and Skydio is expected to be given that exemption, but people wil buy a 10 year old Phantom 4 over a Skydio, so Skydio won't even get any business.
If they don't undo this law soon or hand out blanket exemptions, this will probably become one of the biggest industrial suicide in at least a decade. It's truly awe inspiring that all the headlines are treating this as a DJI problem when DJI and other Chinese companies are the only winners.
