Japan see the whole Asia as monkeys and see themselves as honorary white. Not only China, being racist to Korea, Vietnam, India etc will surely get their politicians a lot of support. That's just the kind of people Japanese are. I'm sure they don't care about Taiwan. Just want to meddle with China.

They’ve seen China give a lot of “final warnings” over the years on multiple issues to multiple countries resulting in nothing substantial politically. They understand the possible economic consequences, but believe any measures will be temporary, like China’s methods on Australia, Canada, etc. The lack of punishment on Netherlands probably reinforced their view. They are willing to trade short term economic pain for a permanent national re-arm and deployment of missiles close to China.
They believe China will ultimately choose economic stability over any military action. They’re probably right.
But what if they are wrong. The other countries aren't really doing anything on Taiwan except Lithuania which China dealt with.
It seems Japan didn't expect China to react this much this fast which is why they need to double down to not lose face.
As for Japan re-arming, unless you swallowed the Kool aid about Japan learning it's lessons, it was always gonna happen in the future. Maybe you can delay it but one day you will need to be prepared for it.

I for one did not know that the 5 victorious states -now being the UN P5 have the LEGITIMATE right to unilaterally attack/destroy said enemy stat,es Japan and Germany-also Italy should they ever posed a threat to P5 states again....wow these bit of legal warfare is a golden nugget diplomatically giving China-the aggrieved party-the legal causus belli to actually attack Japan ...."fallout indeed"-In a way it abrogates the US/Japan defence treaty and a way for USA to lawyer weasel its way out leaving Japan to take all the punches.Back when this was document of surrender was written ,NO ONE thought that China would be in this position of a global superpower with the economic and military reach to actually crush nippon-loving it.
They’re only wrong if China takes decisive, significant action. Otherwise, it’s a gamble that pays off, renews japans value in the eyes of America, and firms up domestic political standing. Any possible economic backlash they’ll just play victim and galvanize the japanese public.
