I can understand why they made English their official language, it's the language of international business and diplomacy. This means it was a purely pragmatic decision and tbh it has served them well. Furthermore, Singapore is not a Chinese society, it's multicultural and if they had made Mandarin the official everyday language they ran the risk of isolating the Malays, the Tamils, and other groups. Besides, Lee Kuan Yew later decided to encourage the use of the Chinese language among the ethnic Chinese via Chinese schools. Unlike Hong Kong, Singapore was an independent country surrounded by countries that distrusted it, they had to make hard decisions.Singapore is the worst western worshipping Han/East Asian country. They literally gave up their language to make English their language of everyday life. Even hong kong is better than them.
So, its no wonder where their loyalties lie. When push comes to shove, they will show their anti-China feelings.
