New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

One family member is happy with his new BYD Seal, while another was very impressed by BYD Shark 6 on a test drive. I have suggested that he also take a look at GWM Tank 300 and Cannon Alpha PHEV, though I think he has shelved the notion of a vehicle purchase for the time being. A third family member living in Bali, Indonesia has been generally satisfied with his Wuling Alvez/Xingchi, though that is a pure ICE vehicle. It has survived being flooded, which definitely counts for something.

I was impressed by BYD Sealion 6 on a test drive, though the lack of a spare tyre bothers me. To be fair, most other PHEVs on the Australian market (excepting the utes: Shark 6, Cannon Alpha, Ford Ranger) also lack a spare tyre. But if Toyota RAV4 PHEV can do it...

What BYD needs in the next 3~5 years are product durability and customer services. It takes time to establish a global brand, as old saying "nine women cannot have a baby in one month". And the secret sauce of Toyota success is its Total Quality Management (TQM) oriented corporate culture. Chinese brands must overcome old habits of bloody price war for market share. That will be what it takes for BYD to surpass Toyota.

A Cultivator bro underwent tribulation in a BYD, and the car survived.

Safety is no longer is an issue for BYD vis-a-vis Toyota etc. It is actually quite amazing that all top Chinese brands have already achieved safety on par with global brands. On the other hand, reliability, total-cost-of-ownership and resale value are defining characteristics of a global car brand. Only time can tell if BYD can repeat what Toyota and Honda have accomplished in the past 5 decades or so.
