Given US/EU sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, you'd bet that US/EU would do the same to China over Taiwan, huge sanctions.

Now that US is fighting the entire world at once, it's best to China to fight back hard, and take this opportunity to divide US and EU camp, and pull EU closer to China with trade, fight back now. It's really now or never. If China acquiesce/surrenders, it will only face a stronger united US/EU camp in the future who will pull the same shenanigans.

The fact is all US allies complaining about Trumps tariffs could've stopped him in his first term. They all went along even though they hated him. Right now they can do the same even with the hole they're in now since Trump's first term. They were stupid enough to follow Trump and then Biden who was so weak he followed Trump's trade policy because he knew the Republicans would paint him as an agent of China even if it was for the better for the US economy. Despite all the anti-globalization rhetoric in the US, the US economy grew multiple times more since 2000. It went up. It didn't go down. US companies made more money than ever because they exploited cheap labor overseas. Don't blame the rest of the world because US politicians screwed it up for the average American letting the rich get richer making all the money. But the only way they can do it is by making a deal with China as an alternative bypassing the US. Are they smart enough to do it? By the actions of the past... no! So let anyone that's stupid enough to jump onto a ship they know is sinking to suffer because if China gives them a lifeline, you think they'll ever learn by being nice to them letting them have both ways?

China will probably just impose another 50% tariffs on crappy US products.

IMHO it would make little sense.

China mainly imports agricultural and energy (oil/gas) commodities from US: a +34% tariff practically means to put US product out of the Chinese market.

China does not need further tariffs to decouple, instead for the kind of products imported by US a 50% tariff may not be enough to stop buying Chinese, so now Trump goes all in with the 100% tariff.

I still don't understand how can US importers quickly find replacements, because for many of those products the alternative supply chains have been already disrupted or reduced to a small capacity many years ago.

Trump threatens China with an ADDITIONAL 50% tariff if they don’t remove their new 34% tariff on U.S. goods

Very unlikely China will remove the 34% tariff, very unlikely Trump is joking -> by April 9th we will have 100% tariff on Chinese goods.

Practically he is decoupling from China in one go.

This will have very heavy impact for both countries.

IMHO after the experience of slow decoupling in semiconductors, where the export bans have been gradual and spaced in time along 5 years, with the net result that China has been able to reach self-sufficiency with an incredible hard work but also with many years of time, now he does not want to do the same mistake and is going for the full punch immediately....
He already made the mistake by increasing tariffs incrementally in his first term. Doing it in one punch now probably won't be much of a difference to china at all. The advantage of surprise and "one punch " large tariffs have already been lost. Now it just seems like his desperate and can't back down.
Next is what? Add on another 100%? 200%?

I wouldn’t put it past him. Considering, we apparently are not understanding whether the 4th D should be placed on the left or the right, in his 4D hungry-hungry-hippo-backgammon-monopoly-chess
