The J-20S should also be a very excellent platform for training future J-36 pilots, beyond serving as command nodes for future Chinese loyal wingman-type UCAVs, given that the J-20S pretty much served as the "X-plane" for the PLAAF to study and evaluate on what they want to see on their future aerial combat systems.

Indeed. It is the first step in a doctrinal shift within PLAAF. Red Sword 2027 is going to be crazy.

Dropping stealthy pylons is still better than carrying stealth pylons because stealthy pylons RCS > no pylons RCS. Cost isn't an issue at all considering what it is for and how uncommon it would be. Creating dropable pylons and modifying latches to allow dropping under movement and closing latches with seals would be the challenge.

As for J-20S entering "mass" production. This is basically the equivalent of the USAF NGAD now that the NGAD program is considering regendering itself into identifying as a new block of F-35 with CCA command capabilities. This is precisely what J-20S role is in PLAAF. Except the USAF has not even managed to get into service this NGAD F-35 while J-20S hasn't just been in service for a number of years now but is entering production rate approaching well into the double digit per year... who knows maybe even approaching J-20's >100 units/year.
