I think the US was expecting a quick sale and American users would not notice. China /Bytedance not selling would give them the maximum leverage. Since China requires JV to operate and follow local laws, it can't complain too much if JV are setup in the US as well. Maybe they will trade for also some ownership of tesla china as well.

Well JV is probably what Elon thought when he proposed it, but at end of the day Chinese law prohibit any sale, and Beijing didn't "remind" ByteDance to "follow the law" if the law was flexible.

So Elon can invest and become a share holder, but he can't do any more than what existing American shareholders already do.

But hey if Trump wants to pay ByteDance to avoid TikTok shutdown I don't think ByteDance would mind.
