Exclusive: China's Hesai to halve lidar prices next year, sees wide adoption in electric cars​

  • Price drop may make use of lidar appealing for even budget EVs

SHANGHAI, Nov 27 (Reuters) - China's Hesai Group , the world's largest maker of lidar sensors for autonomous driving, said it plans to slash the price of its key product by half next year which should lead to far wider adoption of the technology in electric cars.

"Chery Automobile Co. Ltd. has become the first Chinese automaker to produce cars in Europe. The Ebro S700, which started rolling off the production line in Barcelona Saturday, is the first model that Chery is making with its joint venture partner EV Motors SA. The Spanish carmaker signed a joint venture agreement with Chery in April to develop electric vehicles together. EV Motors owns the Ebro brand. The two companies are manufacturing the S700 in a former Nissan Motors Co. Ltd. factory that shut down in 2021. Producing vehicles for the local market in Spain will help Chery sidestep the EU’s recently raised tariffs on China-made EVs."

SHANGHAI, Nov 27 (Reuters) - China's Hesai Group , the world's largest maker of lidar sensors for autonomous driving, said it plans to slash the price of its key product by half next year which should lead to far wider adoption of the technology in electric cars.

why does this need to be given an "exclusive" report? It's been reported for a while now from Robosense and Hesai that cost will come below 1500 RMB. BYD has said it can lower lidar cost to 900 RMB.

Your thoughts on this...
Hesai and Robosense are the obvious dominant LIDAR suppliers with Seyond third (didn't even hear of them until now).
Hesai and Robosense are Chinese companies, while Seyond is US-domiciled but most of the leadership and funding is Chinese/Asian.
Since the EV growth in China has been cutthroat, and semi-autonomous driving a key customer demand, this has driven the 3 companies marketshare growth.

That being said, LIDAR/ADAS is not strictly tied to EVs, rather it was that ADAS development was converging with EV mandates. With Biden's bans on Chinese auto electronics, most likely Hesai and Robosense will be shut out. Furthermore, EV plans by western automakers are basically all being walked back.

Is there any inherent advantage in using an EV platform ADAS? Perhaps higher potential power output?
Is there any hope for western companies like Valeo and Luminar to gain marketshare with a captive market? (Or perhaps ADAS in the west is simply walked back as well, and leadership ceded to Chinese companies)

I'm not really sure your question here. EV platforms are more optimized for ADAS if that's what you are asking since you already have wire across your EVs and an efficient electrical system. You don't need to duplicate that.

There is no hope for western companies in ADAS related stuff for China. Lidar is just one part of that.

Notice how Bosch and Continental are at top and Cheng Tech, Huawei, WHST and Fudi account for just 18% of the market?

Well, I would bet a year from now, Chinese suppliers will be at 50%.

Once we ramp up production at Fudi, no one else really has a chance.

Remember, a lot of the automakers still using Western ADAS sensors are actually the foreign JVs as well as Tesla. Or incompetent Western worshipper like NIO.
