I think folks are giving Trump too much credit, he's not going to go easy on China at all and he will likely try to make tougher moves to contain China.

It's not about being shallow or putting appearances first. It's that China's so solid, they have nothing objective to criticize so "aesthetics" are all they can talk about because anyone can call anything beautiful or ugly. I took a look and I see nothing more impressive about the Mongolian outfit than the Chinese outfit. As a matter of fact, I much prefer the clean and bold look of the Chinese outfit that says proud of my country and right down-to-business for the medals. The Mongolian outfit has too much little stuff going on and it doesn't even look athletic.

One of the few times i agree with SCMP opinion on something Chinese.
Chinese outfit look extremely boring and western, a bit more hanfu style outfits would look better.
I bet some Chinese libtards from Shanghai made the decision to go with the Westernized outfits for China. Everyone who brainstormed this shit up, proposed it, and signed off on it should be put to the death via iron maiden or brazen bull.
Injury or not, he could at least had acknowledged the Hong Kong crowd with a simple speech or a friendly wave with a sincere "Thank you". That would have solved any misunderstanding.

It's a fuckin' red jacket over white shirt and pants. What is there to criticize? I find them completely fine; simple, striking color, to-the-point. If I had seen a better but still simple and bold athletic outfit built around the hanfu, I might go that way but I didn't see the choices and I don't see anything wrong. That's my team; I love how they look and I'm sure they'll make me proud with how they perform. That's it.
They are in a hurry to make public that the whole event do not have any connections to Chinese tourists. Bringing back memory of the Mekong River massacre of Chinese nationals years ago is bad for business.
In my opinion, I don't think that the Chinese Olympic team's attire is that bad. Yeah its kinda old-fashioned, but its not as terrible as the SCMP is describing it to be. It wouldn't have been an issue if it wasn't for SCMP and Western media's critical comparisons with the Mongolian team's attire. Would Chinese athletes looked better in hanfu-styled outfits? Sure, but this is just a small matter and its not important for the Olympics.
SCMP and Western media are looking for things to poke at China, because they don't have much left to criticize China objectively. They put too much emphasis on vanity over ability. China prioritizes ability and results first, that is why they can actually win more.
What truly matters is winning medals. Nobody will truly remember the outfits that athletes wear during the opening and closing ceremonies unless there were winners wearing them. Winners will make even ugly attires legendary, and people will just laugh the ugliness off.
