I wouldn't be surprised if this was planned. He plays for inter Miami which is an American club. Suarez and Busquets also didn't play.
Highly publicized friendly match in which Messi failed to play at all and has since explained that he was unwell. Both HK government and fans spent a lot of money on the event.
Now, if Messi had decided on the day that he was unfit to play, nobody was going to force him to. People are taking issue with his behaviour throughout the event, especially in comparison to the subsequent friendly in Japan in which he played. In HK, his contempt towards the event, the fans and the organizers came across loudly.
If you read between the lines, US is trying to do everything to kill HK. Despite virtue signalling in 2019, they deep down are butthurt about their defeat and are now acting like bad losers. I guess this is why China says it's not enough you defeat your enemies, you must go to their roots and pulled them out so they never come back. Otherwise this is what happens.
From changing made in HK to made in China, HK sanctions, attacking the stock market, media slander and now this, you can see what they are trying to do. Taylor Swift didn't come to HK and they tried to say big stars don't come to HK anymore.
But in 2019, they laughed at China thinking it could kill off China so I'm not sure why they think they can do better. Soros, Ackman and other hedge fund guys failed. If HK is still alive, the US will have done what China couldn't have, make the HK people pick the Chinese side over the west.
Maybe one day it will be revealed he was instructed to. But by then no one will care.
