Even if the ship is Chinese made, its owned by a Canadian company. I am not sure how the Popsci author could conclude that the ship would further China's ambitions for control of the sea's resources.

Now that's a ship! China on Tuesday saw a massive 20,000 TEU container ship delivered in Shanghai. The vessel, built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, is 400 meters long and 73 meters tall, with a deck the size of nearly 4 standard soccer fields.
