The gunner sights are periscopic, meaning the gunner sits considerably lower in the turret so that he's securely behind the frontal turret armor. The commander requires greater situational awareness, so his sight sits higher (and rotates) to allow an unobstructed 360-degree view.

The reason gunner sights are recessed in a 'cutout' on Type-99A is probably because the height of the turrets is considerably greater than that of Type-99, that and increased top protection makes the gunner sight appears more recessed.

As for the other turrets you mentioned, the same applies; so long the gunner sits behind the frontal armor, he's ok.
Ah I see, I knew of the periscopic part of the gunner sight but couldn’t understand the reason for the increased recess.

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.

Hi RichardGao

Thanks for the info, I know it should be ask in PLA MBT thread, since you're here, There are rumors that PLA will stay at 125mm and use a single shell ammo type instead of binary and also will upgrade its IFV using 40mm.
You mean PLA is gonna use fixed instead of separate loading shells? I have info but it's not exactly about this. (Also the info is too recent to be disclosed so please don't ask me about that, all I can tell you is it's about *#%¥) As for IFVs, norinco has an export wheeled IFV (CS/AA5) that uses 40mm CTA ammo. For domestic use, I still need some more information to tell you if it's true.

Sorry but I couldn't turn the photos over. The original photos were in the direction and I couldn't change it manually for some reason. My apologies for that.

hi RichardGao

I know you had answer my question, but man that shells looks lethal, there are news that India had airlifted T-72 , I hope the PLA had sent the new anti tanks ammo.

Guys, I know that Type 15 isn't supposed to face a real heavy MBT, but in the rare and unlikely situation it actually does, do you think the 105mm gun is enough?

I have this nagging feeling that they'll be better off having a 125mm gun. After all, China has gone through the trouble to design a whole new tank for that one specific situation (high altitude operation). There's no reason not to develop a low recoil (not low-velocity) 125mm to at least enable it to engage whatever target the current battlefield has.

They could even recoup the investment for that new low-recoil 125mm gun by mounting it on their wheeled assault guns like Type 11 replacement and probably update their MBT guns. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Note: Sorry if it sounds like fanboying. It's just a hypothetical situation.

Just guessing, but they probably tried it and decided it wasn't going to work
