That is the scariest aspect of China industrial capabilities. It can out-manufacture many high end industrial goods than their origins, on a mass scale. To most countries, in some cases even in so-called industrialized countries, they cannot manufacture even though you hand over the BOMs or show them the goodies. Industrial imitation or copy is often as high tech as origins. The difference is often in the original design. Once the design is known, it is all about industrial capabilities, where China rules.
Someone also roleplaying Su-35 in that conversation:
Su-35: you've been seeing other girls haven't you?
Sukhoi worker: errr, just your cousin
And then Su-35 became a yandere.

Hmm. Am I reading this wrong, or is there no mention of active radar guidance?
The more interesting aspect to me (at least with regards to Su-27 derivatives) is what novel changes were made. Something like J-16D has no Russian analogue, so pretty much all the mission critical equipment is of domestic origin. I think people get way to hung up over the idea of "Chinese copying", when it's really irrelevant. If Su-27/30 was not possible, then it would just be JH-7. If anything, the proliferation of PLA Flanker derivatives really speaks more to the quality of the original Russian design rather than any lack of originality on the Chinese side.
Slightly off topic:
Since it relates to my first posting. The first comment on that article is quite telling, questioning the loyalty of all "their" STEM Graduates that "we" educated. Not sure if the person is sarcastic, but I just don't understand the mind of people that genuinely believe that. It's just totally illogical.
Just imagine, the top Chinese spies spend so much of their hard work and talent to get into Cal Tech or MIT just to COPY something? So stupid...
A big chunk of the people who comment on the WarZone and similar sites are white supremacists trump-did-nothing-wrong and similar types of nationalists/supremacists, in denial of the decline of the US/Europe/Japan/India.
Even when it comes to designs that don't look like anything the west has, they will manage to come up with a "looks like an X and Y clone" or at the very least mention how it must be full of cloned/stolen tech.
