Shilao podcast talked about this issue today. Initially, AC-313A is using ANETO-1C, because this will make certification in markets like Europe a lot easier. Down the road, there is certainly the domestic engine option of WZ-10.

Is the Z8L’s side door wider? Is that why it protrudes in to the fuel tank
The window on the door certainly is bigger. Is the Z8L’s side door wider? Is that why it protrudes in to the fuel tank
Why compare Z8L with Sea Stallion/ Super Stallion? They are not in the same weight class.Assuming Z-8L performance is similar to the AC313A performance AND AC313 performance, for which we have some basic data:
- Passenger capacity: 28
- Internal load: 4000kg
- External load (underslung): 5000kg
MTO weight 13 800 kg (as per )
AC313 specs, for comparison
Empty weight 7560 kg
internal load 4000 kg
External load underslung 5000 kg
...then we have this somewhat peculiar helicopter which seems very large but is in fact not really optimized for heavy loads.
Z-20 is possibly not that far off, while being a lighter and cheaper helicopter.
We don't know the empty weight figure but it's not likely far off the AC313 one. Possibly a bit heavier.
In essence, the Z8L may be regarded as a somewhat bigger CH-46 of the PLA. Optimized for troop transport at a long range, but not as optimized for heavy loads.
Despite its length/width, for example, it's not comparable to now retired Sea Stallion. (19 ton MTOW and 5900 kg underslung load for Sea Stallion) Let alone Super Stallion, which is of course a whole different class of helicopter.
