It's not a Glamour project.
J20 is a Glamour Project, China's stealth fighter,
Y20 is a Glamour Project a Transport the size of which that has only been equaled previously by the US and Russia.
Z20 by contrast is in a class of chopper that most countries with helicopter makers can build. H60, Ka60, KUH-1, Bell 525, AW149, NH90 you also have the rise of newer rotary wing platforms in development The V280 Valor, AW609, V22, Tiltrotors, coaxials with pushers. which for an aggressively modernizing Army that wants to sit on the Razors edge of tech is where the Z20 kinda falls to lack luster. The Practical need comes in here though and the Command has to say, "We need this more today, and can catch up latter".
And if you note they are not actively preventing leaks, It's not a Black Project just not a Sexy one.
What is happening though is where the cameras are swarming J20 like paparazzi On a Hollywood starlet in a Bikini.
And Y20 is being shown on the Red Carpet like Robert Downey Jr. at the opening of the next Avengers movie.
Z20 is the Indy movie that only gets seen by those in the know willing to travel to that one Independent Theater hours away. It's not that it's not in the open.
It's just not being promoted.
That's a...strange way to compare, to say the least. Nevertheless, more or less on the point.
The Y-20 project was never hidden, it got elevated to become one of those "5-year plan" projects, hit the frontpage about the same time as C919; J-20 got no "official recognition" for 5 years until Zhuhai Airshow 2016, during that time a rather successful PR campaign played itself out - remember, back then the MiG-21 bloodline J-7 series was still the "poster boy" and J-10 had yet replace the J-7 in enough numbers. Plus, J-20's CAC test flight homebase is surrounded by civilan housing, so J-20 is easily spotted.
Z-20 is...well, we know they've been at it since 1990s, but helicopters has always shoved to secondary-tier priority due to various realities forcing China to pursue other projects first. Besides, its test flight homebase is said to be quite out of the way, and spotting reports only came out during the test flight phase when the Z-20 shuttled to various climate zone across China.
Whichever way it'd be, the domestic demand is more than enough to fully occupy the production capabilities all the way to 2020s if not beyond. Don't expect FMS until after PLA / PLAN made overseas deployments with Z-20, utilizing them in actual actions outside China borders, not necessary in combat ops, for I'm certain that there will be plenty opportunity for humanitarian aid actions, y'know, Indonesia or Philippines could suffer at least one nasty quake in the coming decade or so....Whenever the Z-20 is ready they are going to need to churn them out in numbers just for the PLA. Engine upgrades to existing Z-10's or new builds with more powerful engines are also going to be needed in numbers pronto just for the PLA. They will have to mass produce at a rate like they have never done before with helicopters if they want to quickly meet their own needs as well as those of exports.
