Lieutenant General
i must say i can't any examples where a scout helicopter or even a light attack helicopter had a mast mounted radar. This is a first, and it is a bit perplexing.

I expected a scout helo to have mast mounted electrooptical sensors, but not radar. I expected to find mast mounted radar on z-10, but even though it is older helo than z19, it didnt get one, but its younger brother did. Strange.

I guess that may point out that z19 isnt so much a scout helo as it is light attack helo. Or maybe it really is devised to work in tandem with z10, but that seems too complicated. no one tried that before.

It is not strange or surprising at all that the Z19 would have a MMW radar fitted before the Z10.

The Z19 is basically a Z9 redesigned with a different cockpit and fuselage, but the engine and tail design are identical to the Z9. The Z9 in turn has been used by the PLA as a testbed for mast mounted MMW radar. As such, it would be have relatively straight forward to implement the changes made to the Z9 in order to mount a mast top radar on the Z19. It may well have been possible to use the exact same design as those installed on Z9s without needing any modifications.

Indeed, the MMW radar we have seen on the Z19 does look identical to one of the two types previously seen on Z9 testbeds.

This is the other bulkier, but perhaps more capable, design.

Just found Huitong's picture of Z-10 LH94101 at Tongxian, so that is confirmed.

8 x 12, that is almost 100...

Edit: Well, 108, since it appears that this same 10 Regt has also got a squadron of Z-19...

Ok so that means

WZ-10 operates in 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th aviation regiments that's 60 units

And WZ-19 operates in 2nd, 8th and 9th aviation regiments that's 36 units, where is this 10th Reg coming from?

If in 2 years they have built all those WZ-10 units looks like production is 2-3 units per month and same rate for WZ-19, that is a typical rate for attack helos

Rates will only increase so I think by 2015 we will have a few hundred attack helos in operation, maybe in excess of 300 units

Btw what is Huitong?

is this second image real and not photoshopped? i ask because that is excactly what i would expect to see on z19 class helo. it doesnt look like a radar ball but an EO ball, very, very much like tiger UHT.

Well here is a slightly bigger version of the same picture.

I cannot see any of the tell-tale signs of photoshop, and the picture has been floating on the net for a long time without anyone coming out and proving that it is a fake/PS that I know of, so I am inclined to believe that it is real.

However, the heavy shadows and lack of general detail does make it harder to say for sure with a great degree of confidence.

I guess it is possible that this second mast mount represents an EO turret, and if it does, then that would make more sense than having two MMW radar mounts in field testing, especially when you consider the size difference between the two. If they were both radars and the smaller one had similar performance to the larger one, the larger one would simply never have made it to being installed on a Z9 since the smaller one is obviously the superior design.

OTOH, if the larger mount was also radar and it was designed using similar tech to the smaller one, it should be in a totally different class in terms of range and capabilities, so it would be strange that the small one would be made.

Huitong is the name of the person that runs a website/blog that gives information on the Chinese military. He apparently has inside knowledge. Many people go to his site to get new updates on Chinese military developments.

Here it is:
