U.S. was probably willing to back Japan at G7. Canada would probably follow America's lead as always. But, Germany and the rest of European members most likely decided not to risk their trade relationships with China especially just after trade with Russia was negatively affected over Ukraine.

'Homeless spikes' installed outside London flats

Pictures of the spikes were uploaded to Twitter on Saturday, provoking anger from users

Metal spikes have been installed outside a block of luxury flats in London to deter homeless people from sleeping there.

But the installation of the studs has provoked criticism from some after a picture was uploaded to Twitter, the social networking site.

Users said the use of the studs meant homeless people were being treated the same way as pigeons, as similar metal spikes are used to deter them.

Andrew Horton, 33, of Woking, Surrey, took the picture of the inch long studs outside the flats on Southwark Bridge Road as he walked to work on Wednesday.

Mr Horton said: "I can't say for certain but it certainly looked like they were placed there to deter homeless people.

"It's dreadful."

David Wells said on Twitter: "These Anti homeless studs are like the spikes they use to keep pigeons off buildings. The destitute now considered vermin [sic].

The image was widely shared on Twitter (Andrew Horton/Twitter)

However, others defended the studs.

Gavin Logan said on Twitter: "There will be a context behind those anti-homeless spikes. Possibly a last resort against someone who was aggressive and refused housing."

People living in the flats, which sell for upwards of £800,000, said the metal studs were installed two weeks ago after a number of homeless people were seen sleeping there.

One woman resident, who asked not to be named, said: “There was a homeless man asleep there about six weeks ago.

"Then about two weeks ago all of a sudden studs were put up outside.

"I presume it is to deter homeless people from sleeping there."

A couple, who also asked to remain anonymous, added: "It's because of the homeless.

"The spikes have only been there very recently, less than a month."

A man looking around the flats, a ten-minute walk from Southwark Underground Station, said the spikes would not put him off.

The man, who only gave his name as Peter, a lawyer, said: "But would you want homeless people outside your door?"

Homelessness charities said the use of metal studs to prevent rough sleepers is widespread and they have been installed on ledges and in doorways for more than a decade.

Kathrine Stokes, 39, of Hull, East Yorkshire, photographed studs outside Tesco in Regent Street, London and uploaded the picture on Twitter.

She said: "It's sad. It demonstrates a meaness and a lack of humanity for people."

Katharine Sacks-Jones, head of policy and campaigns at homelessness charity Crisis, said: "It is a scandal that anyone should sleep on the streets in 21st century Britain. Yet over the last three years rough sleeping has risen steeply across the country and by a massive 75 per cent in London.

"Behind these numbers are real people struggling with a lack of housing, cuts to benefits and cuts to homelessness services to help them rebuild their lives.

"They might have suffered a relationship breakdown, a bereavement or domestic abuse. They deserve better than to be moved on to the next doorway along the street. We will never tackle rough sleeping with studs in the pavement. Instead we must deal with the causes."

Tesco said the spikes outside its store in Regent Street were not intended to target those in need of shelter.

A Tesco spokesman said: “The studs were put in place to try and stop people engaging in anti-social behaviour like smoking or drinking outside our store, which can be intimidating for our customers.”

Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, said: "Southwark Council is aware of concerns raised regarding the installation of spikes outside a privately-owned building on Southwark Bridge Road to prevent rough sleeping.

"The council can look into health and safety or planning concerns that are reported to us.

"Without regards to people sleeping rough the council has a dedicated officer who works closely with organisations like St Mungo's [a homelessness charity], who have a 'no second night out' policy to ensure rough sleepers are found shelter an support."

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two police officers were having lunch at a strip mall pizza buffet when a man and a woman fatally shot them in a point-blank ambush, then fled to a nearby Wal-Mart where they killed a third person and then themselves in an apparent suicide pact, authorities said.

The attack at a CiCi's Pizza restaurant on Sunday killed Officers Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31, who are both husbands and fathers. One of the shooters yelled, "This is a revolution!" but a motive remains under investigation, Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield told The Associated Press.

"It's a tragic day," Sheriff Doug Gillespie said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. "But we still have a community to police, and we still have a community to protect. We will be out there doing it with our heads held high, but with an emptiness in our hearts."

For added safety, officers who normally work alone will be paired up with another officer for a time, Gillespie said.

The deadly rampage in the aging shopping center about five miles northeast of the Las Vegas Strip took place in a matter of minutes. Police were called at 11:22 a.m. to the pizzeria, where one of the officers was able to fire back at his assailants. It's unclear whether he hit them, Gillespie said.

Shots were reported five minutes later at a nearby Wal-Mart, where the shooters gunned down a person just inside the front door and exchanged gunfire with police before killing themselves, police said.

Both officers were pronounced dead at University Medical Center. Beck had been with the department since 2001 and leaves behind a wife and three children. Soldo had been with the force since 2006 and is survived by a wife and baby, police said.

He was described as a good father and a "great guy" by his sister-in-law, Colleen Soldo of Beatrice, Nebraska. She said he attended high school in Lincoln, Nebraska, and previously worked as a corrections officer.

Sheree Burns, 48, told the Las Vegas Sun she was eating at the restaurant, seated just behind the two officers when a man came up to one of the officers and shot him in the head.

She said she ducked under her table but peeked up and saw the other officer being shot.

Pauline Pacheco was shopping at Wal-Mart when she saw the armed man and grabbed her father to escape, KLAS-TV reported.

"We saw when the man was walking, he was shouting, yelling bad words, and suddenly he had a gun," she told the station. "It was terrible, it was terrible. That man was crazy."

Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the male suspect yelled "everyone get out" before shooting at Wal-Mart. The suspects then walked to the back of the store.

Gov. Brian Sandoval said in a statement he was devastated by the killings of the two officers and an innocent bystander in an "act of senseless violence."

In a statement, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called the killings a "cruel act" and praised the officers for dedicating "their lives to protecting all of us in our community."

Wal-Mart employees and shoppers were taken to a nearby women's clothing store to be interviewed by police. The restaurant and Wal-Mart remained closed as detectives processed evidence. McMahill said the investigation is "very complex" because it involves more than 1,000 witnesses.

Wal-Mart expressed its condolences in a statement and said the company was working with police on the investigation. Cici's Pizza said in a statement the company was deeply saddened by the shooting and would keep the location closed until further notice.

Sunday's killings come less than a year after the Las Vegas police department's most recent on-duty death. Officer David VanBuskirk died while rescuing a stranded hiker by helicopter on July 22, 2013.

The department has lost officers over the past decade in vehicle accidents and in an off-duty shooting, but the most recent on-duty shooting death happened Feb. 1, 2006, when Sgt. Henry Prendes was ambushed during a domestic violence call.

It's pretty nasty, and surely a public danger, especially for kids!

Like a commenter said, the same effect can be achieved with some flower pots!

Those spikes are heartless, but they are not really dangerous.

Trying to lie on them will be very uncomfortable (the whole point of them), but they are not sharp or long enough to cause much more than bruising unless you go out of your way and try and hurt yourself on them.

As for flower pots, well those can be moved, vandalised or stolen. Although if the world economy picks up again and commodity prices start to skyrocket again, I wonder how long it will be before someone smashes up the base to pry loose the spikes to sell for scrap. Even if its not economically the most efficient thing to do, I can imagine some homeless or formerly homeless people doing it as much for satisfaction as for the monetary rewards.
